frayed wires on lightning cable for original Ipad Mini

I have the original Ipad Mini and an Apple lightning cable that is a couple of years old. I just got burned on the cable part that goes into the ipad mini. I usually charge it every day and usually use the fat end of the cable to plug it into the ipad. I didn't realize there were frayed wires. If I hadn't gotten burned could that have caused an electical fire if I had left it charging? Do they make a cable now that would notify you that your cable has exposed wires?

There's no such thing...yet.

You probably already know that this cable is prone to fraying, and needs to be replaced. I've found that electrical tape can keep the frayed cable stable until you get a replacement. I use an Anker lightning cable, since it's especially heavy duty.

They assume you have good eyes and if you can see the screen, you can also see and inspect a cable.

This "oh, please, notify me of everything cause I can't think by myself" thing is truly getting out of hand.
