Where has the Create AAC version one in iTunes 12?

I've trying to get a track I have put on an iphone 4s device, converted to be a ringtone.

In preferences, it's set to import as AAC. If I right click on the track, convert to AAC is not there.

If I try to import a track directly into the Tones folder, it won't let me. I get a nasty tone when I try in iTunes.

So I can see the track in the Music Library. How do I make it a ringtone?

When you add content to an Apple device the standard practice is to add it to the iTunes library. From the there it may be manually added or synced to one or more devices. At this point there are two copies, one in the computer's library and one in the device's library. As stated the one in the device's library cannot be used as the source for the conversion process. Use the one in the computer's library. If there isn't a copy in the computer's library now go and find the original source file and add it back into iTunes.

Set start and end times no more than 40 seconds apart. Right-click and Create AAC version. Locate the new file in Windows Explorer. Change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r. Make sure that the Tones section of the iTunes library is enabled. Drop the new file into the iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes. It should show up in Tones. Sync it to your device.
