password maximum length ios 9

I am curious about the maximum allowable password(passcode) on iOs 9. I know the default changed from 4 to 6 but for a 'custom passcode' I was wondering what, if any, is the maximum number of characters allowable for a custom passcode? Does the OS truncate if the number of characters exceeds the allowable limits? Just trying to satisfy my curiosity given today's announcement concerning the court order. Thanks.

I've never found anything in Apple's documentation about a character limit, but I know for a fact it can be at least 42 characters - I tried that once just out of curiosity. I normally use a 9 or 10 character complex passphrase (Standard rules, no dictionary words, at least one case change, at least one numeric character and at least one special character). Engadget had an article awhile back that indicated they felt it could be at least up to 50 characters, and likely longer.
