How to remove the flagged mailbox in MacMail

I flagged an email for later review which created, for the first time, a Flagged Mailbox on the left side bar. Now, I regret having done this as there's little enough space on my 13.3" MBP for another, seldom needed, mailbox. Is there a way to remove this mailbox (the delete mailbox option is not available via the menu bar's Mailbox tab).

The mailbox should disappear when you have no flagged messages in it. Delete the message or unflagg it. If it is still there with no flagged messages, quit Mail and restart it.

I couldn't agree more. I have over 9,000 flagged messages, and I need them to remain flagged, so that when I search for mail from a given sender, the most important messages are highlighted.

But I also do NOT want or need to see the "Flagged" mailbox in the sidebar, constantly displaying that ever-increasing number of flagged messages with a badge—which gives the impression that those are unread, actionable messages.

For Pete's sake, Apple, let us (a) choose which mailboxes we want to see, and let us (b) decide whether or not to display badges for each mailbox (on an individual basis).
