How to have sidebar with thumbnails by default in Preview app ?

I'm using OSX El Capitan 10.11.3 on iMac, and whenever I open a PDF, there is no sidebar. I must everytime click the sidebar icon and select thumbnails. I'd like to have it on by default, but can't find the option or how to modify the plist file...

AFAIK, Preview 8.1 opens multi-page PDFs with the thumbnail sidebar open by default unless the PDF is saved with the sidebar closed. Single page PDFs are the opposite, they open with the sidebar hidden unless saved with the thumbnail sidebar open.

Make sure "Continuous Scroll" is selected in Preview> Preferences> PDF "Opening for the first time:" Show As from the drop down menu.

If yours does not do that then it is damaged or one of its .plist files is corrupt or the permissions are wrong. That I don't know how to fix. Perhaps someone else does.

Thank you very much for your help.

I've looked at your link, thought I knew about PVPDFSuppressSidebarOnOpening and I thought I had checked already in the plist file, I checked again and found it was set to true !

So I went to ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Preview/Data/Library/Preferences/

and set PVPDFSuppressSidebarOnOpening to false in com.apple.Preview.plist .
