I'm trying to install rails on OSX El Capitan 10.11.3, and it's trying to sudo. When I type in the root password it doesn't accept it (Sorry, try again). I know the password is correct because I can 'su' and it works, plus I can log in directly as root as a user and it works. I've disabled SIP. Any ideas?

You need to type in your regular administrator password, not the root password.

It appears that you are not using the sudo command correctly. You must be logged into the computer with a password protected admin account. Then use sudo command and you will be prompted for the password of the admin account you are logged in with.

Thanks that was it. I was logged in as an administrator which had a blank password, and though I tried that (no password) it seems I had to have a password on my administrator account for sudo to work.
sudo won't work but su does
