Why do random websites keep popping up for no reason?

I went online to search this question already and read about downloading Macleaner to check for a Trojan Horse. I downloaded Macleaner and it did the scan but then wanted me to pay money in order "fix" the issues on my computer.

Here are the instructions I followed:

That's crapware. Don't do anything more with it and uninstall it completely.


Run this legitimate free program, which will scan for and remove adware, trojans and known keyloggers. Recommended by numerous high level contributors here, and also by many Apple tech support reps.

You can also use those numbers for DNS servers in that old screenshot, above.


After doing so, go to https://www.opendns.com/welcome/ to check that it's working. DNS Changer is ancient. Forget about it.
