Is iMovie 3.0.3 Free?

Is iMovie 3.0.3 Free?

Can anyone confirm that iMovie 3.0.3 is free. Version Tracker lists it as the last 'freeware' version here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10228&vid=106236.

Unlike iPhoto 2 the Apple website does not have it for download but I have found another website where I can source the full package.

I just wanted to ensure I wouldn't be doing anything naughty by installing it.

iMovie 3 has never been free. It was included when you bought a new Mac around 2003-2004. Later versions are still included when you but a new Mac.

You Intel Mac should have iMovie 6 on it. Besides, iMovie 3 is the most bug-ridden version to date.

My Mac mini does have all the iLife suite. I wanted iMovie 3 to put on my old Power Mac G3 which I have given to my mother. When I was in the Apple store getting Tiger for it I looked at the iLife '06 box, but it said it needed a G4. I wanted to give her a basic out-of-the-box install for her to play with to help her decide whether or not to move to Mac.

This MacUser article ( Google cache copy if it asks you to register) also suggests that iMove was free to download directly from Apple at one point or to purchase with iDVD (and the other iLife applications) on CD, but the link to download no longer leads where it used to...

I just had a neat idea and decided to look up that link on the Internet archive. I'm pretty convinced it that iMovie 3.0.3 was free now as they had a full installer avaliable on their website to download, just like they do with iTunes today. Update: I just tried to use the way back machine page to download it, and it actually points to a current Apple page where the download began. Woo!

iMovie 2.1 was a free download. Perhaps the editor of the magazine assumed iMovie 3 was a free download, too? The updaters from 3.0 to 3.0.1 and later are of course free.

Amazing that Apple forgot to take it down on the UK site.

I never thought of iMovie 3 as a free dowload. I stand corrected.
