Does MacBook Pro have a document writing program like Microsoft Word and Publisher?

Does Mac Book Pro have a document writing program like Microsoft Word or Publisher? And where is it and what is it called?

Thank you.

If your Mac was purchased on or after October 1, 2013 then Pages is available from Apple for no charge. If it isn't already installed on your Mac you can download if from Apple menu > App Store. More information: http://www.apple.com/mac/pages/

Another excellent alternative that is free and a bit more similar to Microsoft Word is Libre Office. https://www.libreoffice.org/

I have Microsoft Word on my PC, which I have transferred all of to my new MacBook Pro. Can I transfer or import my MS Word or do I have to purchase a new version for Mac? Is LibreOffice a good substitute or should I go for "Pages" in the app store? someone said it comes free with my mac. I do remember, before I retired from being a college professor and being on PC's for 40 years, that when my students sent in their papers from their macs with the .doc.x, there was some trouble converting, but I must have figured it out because I did grade all those papers!

Thanks for your help as I adjust to my beautiful new mac that I inherited from my generous son, I love its elegance and it has been only a little daunting getting used to it and importing everything. The proof of the pudding is that I unplugged my Toshiba laptop and put it away!

Some new Macs come with Pages, or Pages is pre-loaded on your account at the Mac App Store.

Pages can produce and consume Microsoft Word documents, but that is not its default. If you have to produce word documents in large numbers, you may be better off with Word.

Word is NOT a "standard format" for word processing. But since Microsoft has pushed it so hard as if it were one, the Open Source Community decided to get together and push back. There are now Word (and other Office applications ) work-alike packages available at the typical Open source price point of free. They are generally very good. The best bet these days is LibreOffice for Mac.

The PC version will not work on the Mac unless you install Windows on your Mac. You need the Mac version which I posted previously is called Office 2016 and may be purchased at the Microsoft site.

After 40 years it would help to read all the replies you receive since several of us already answered your question. 😀
