If your Mac was purchased on or after October 1, 2013 then Pages is available from Apple for no charge. If it isn't already installed on your Mac you can download if from Apple menu > App Store. More information: http://www.apple.com/mac/pages/
Another excellent alternative that is free and a bit more similar to Microsoft Word is Libre Office. https://www.libreoffice.org/

You can run Windows on a Mac either by using Apple Boot Camp or by run Windows as a virtual machine with the Mac operating system. In both cases you have to purchase a copy of Windows
If you do decide to use Windows, running it on a Mac does not make it any nicer.

If you do have access to your .edu email address - you may qualify for a lower priced copy of MS Word - should you choose to go that route - you can check any academic software site for that
And they must be addressed as "Oh exalted one" at all times....
