I have a Cube that the FW ports are blown and I've narrowed it to the motherboard. My question is about the serial number. If I replace the motherboard myself, what effect will that have on my Cube's serial number? Will it be different? Is there a way to change it back to the original if it does change? I looked at the Apple service manual on how to replace, but it mentions nothing on the serial number.
After replacing the logic board the embedded serial number will disappear; System Profiler will probably display a blank on the applicable info line.
The display of the serial number has also been known to disappear after a firmware update.
I have not seen posted in these forums a method to resurrect or to re-encode/re-enter that information onto the logic board. It may be possible to do that at factory level.
Thanks, Don. I was afraid something like that would happen. Apple service provider wants about $250 for replacement, but I can get one on ebay and do it myself for $150. Even though I won't have the serial no. anymore, the savings is worth it to me. Thanks again.
Regardless of who does the logic board replacement, you'll still lose the System Profiler info on the serial number.
Here's a
view of my own G4's System Profiler, for which Apple replaced the board a few years back. Please note the blank serial number for the last entry.
