Apply transition to a title only

Hi everyone,

I've recently taken the plunge to switch from Premiere CC to FCPX (I'm an ex-FCP7 user) and while some of the features are really cool and impressive I'm a bit stuck on this....

FCPX version 10.2.3.

I have a background image or sometimes a video clip and I place a title on top of it. If I apply a transition to the title (such as a push or slide) to bring the text in it also affects the underlying image and video. I want to just animate the text coming in and out - and don't want to do it manually with keyframes. It'd be nice to use some of the cool new effects as well to transition in the title only.

In Premiere and FCP7, I dragged my transition onto the title clip and boom, job done. In FCPX doing the same thing applies the transition to all the clips. For example, a slide transition slides in the text, but also re-slides the underlying video too.

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong - but can't figure it out. Can anyone help?

Final Cut Pro X, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Different transitions behave in different ways. For example, the Slide transition affects the underlying clip if you select "Slide Push", but not if you select "Slide In". In this case it seems to be just a matter of choosing the right options:

Thanks for this - I didn't even spot that each transition had lots of adjustable properties that would affect how they interact with other clips. As you suggested, the Slide In did exactly what I wanted.

It seems odd that it's a bit of a lottery as to what transitions affect all the other clips - in the PP and FCP7 you can use any transition and it will work as you'd expect. However this has at least helped me today get some basic transitions on text working. Thank you for posting!
