Apply transition to a title only

Can you post a screen grab of the title portion of the timeline?

I've applied transitions to titles many times without it causing any change to the clips below.

In Premiere and FCP7, I dragged my transition onto the title clip and boom, job done. In FCPX doing the same thing applies the transition to all the clips. For example, a slide transition slides in the text, but also re-slides the underlying video too.

Different transitions behave in different ways. For example, the Slide transition affects the underlying clip if you select "Slide Push", but not if you select "Slide In". In this case it seems to be just a matter of choosing the right options:

Since you have working knowledge of legacy Final Cut, it is likely that you also used Motion 4 – or Motion templates. In FCP X, most tittles and many transitions are Motion 5 projects and if you have Motion 5 installed, you can open a copy an effect in Motion and customize it to suit your purposes.
