My old Apple ID is popping up (and it won't let me change it). Help?

While trying to restore my new phone from my iCloud backup, I can sign in with my current one, but then the old one will ask me to sign in after I choose which backup to use. Because the old ID no longer exists (but is somehow still connected to my current account?) I cannot "reset the password" or even login with a password because it doesn't exist! This is incredibly frustrating; I would just like to get my new phone up and running.

Update: Apple support told me to "Skip this step". The way he put it, asking about the previous ID is "a test". Skip it, let it restore, and anything that still asks after the restore was truly purchased under a totally separate account.

Of course, I find this totally counterintuitive - if it doesn't actually need the old ID, why ask for it and then error out? It's only going to make people freak out. But hey, at least it worked. Hope this helps anyone else with similar problems.

Well, if your old ID was signed into iCloud, then using your current password would be what you would use.

So, did you sign your old email address out of iCloud? If not, you need to do that now. Also check:

Settings>iTunes & App Store

Settings>Messages>Send & Receive

Settings>FaceTime

If you see your old ID signed in for any of these apps, sign it out and sign in with your updated ID.

I Got a new iPhone 7 and the exact same thing is happening!! Everything came over from the cloud yet apparently there must be something attached, like a purchas or 2 (I used that first ID very little) and the pop up is annoying but the worst part is my new phone won't let me update to 10.3 because it thinks it's still getting stuff from the cloud.

Luckiky I got all pho, notes, everything from the backup from the day before I bought the phone. whatvis odd is inhad another new iPhone and this didn't happen when I upgraded from the cloud

LIke you , I ran into exactly all the same walls. Even apple via the ID page says it's not valid. I've also tried using old passwords and it's a no go because this former ID no longer exists except apparently in the mind of the cloud. this is the pop up . That ID has not existed in years! At a total loss, I signed out and in with current one several times. i really need to update to 10.3 and as long as this pop up is happening I can't , it's lightened where I can't push update and says I can't until all gotten from the cloud. Ugh

If you are restoring from an iCloud backup, it will ask for the password for any ID that is associated with the Music and Apps that it is restoring to the device. Once you have put them in, the item that is pending install will get installed, and the rest of the downloads will continue.

I know I had some issues with a bunch of the music he was restoring getting backed up in the Downloads window. I don't know what caused the initial bottleneck, but I did have to type in my Apple ID passcode for a couple of Apps he has on his device.

Anyway, I ended up erasing it and restoring it again.

You might want to erase it, set it up as new, get the update installed, erase it again, then restore it.

Found the solution! I figured the cloud was trying to grab something very old bought with the old nod non existent ID and migrate it to new phone, comparing devices there was mere one song I could live without.

I Went into Settings> iCloud> backup > stop restoral (as everything I wanted had already been downloaded off the cloud for two days and in actuality an hour) ) and it worked and no pop ups now and I was able to update my phone. All is well.
