Is it possible to find your apple pencil through Bluetooth?

I've lost mine and I've been walking around the house trying to get it to connect to Bluetooth, but when I press apple pencil in Bluetooth settings it says plug in to connect. If it has been paired previously, should it automatically connect when in bluetooth range

iPad Pro Wi-Fi, Cellular

This reply might be too late for you, but I hope someone else can benefit from it. I lost my Apple Pencil yesterday when my grandchildren were using my iPad Pro (I didn't know I had lost it until last night). I searched the house and the furniture for all the likely places. Then I had the same thought. And I read the comment that the pencil will go to sleep mode, so you have to touch the iPad with the Pencil to wake it up.

Well, it turns out that isn't true. When you wake up the iPad and then swipe down to look at your notifications to see the iPad and Pencil battery status, apparently that wakes up the Pencil. Because I was able to use the app: Bluetooth Smart Scanner from Ace Sensor Inc, to walk around the house scanning for a signal. Believe it or not, the app, after about 10 minutes, identified the Apple Pencil and I was able to find the place in the house where the signal was strongest (-30 dBm), and six inches away in a couch was the Pencil!

Actually I downloaded the app which took ages for the Apple Pencil to show up in the scan list and then it just stuck at -dBm wherever I was in the house. After about an hour of searching, finally found it under a strategically placed sock (after going through the hoover bag) - yeah, I was getting a bit panicky...elated when I finally found it. The battery alert/note is a good way to tell if it is actually in the house at all.

If it was idle and went into sleep mode, no it will not pair just because the iPad Pro is now within range. You would have to have the Apple Pencil in hand and tap it to the screen to begin using it to wake it up and cause it to actively re-pair with the iPad Pro. That is part of the power saving functions of the pencil - it does not actively poll for the presence of the iPad once it has been idle and gone into sleep mode.

Currently their is no way to locate it via Bluetooth. I know that the "Jot' stylus (a non Apple product) has an app to locate it via Bluetooth like a beacon. you can also buy square Bluetooth chip things to attach to keys, remotes, cats, dogs, etc. the problem is that with current Bluetooth technology and the size of the tech, this does not work too well and Apple doesn't like to release products unless they work near perfect. How awesome does the Apple Pencil work, awesome. A few Bluetooth chip locator products also make an audible sound, now THAT would be extra helpful. But that also uses more battery to have to keep sending out a constant wide far Bluetooth signal.

So in other words, Apple engineers must have surely thought about it.
