This worked for me as well.

Apple Java (1.6) was installed in /System/Library/Java, unlike the new Oracle Java (I installed 1.8) which is installed in /Library/Java by default.

I had already installed the basic Oracle 1.8 build 151, however to make this work I did this.
1) Remove Apple Java
2) Install full 1.8 JDK (this is important according to multiple sources, the JDK download only won't work) (in the meantime build 152 was available)
3) LibreOffice recognizes the JRE when you check Preferences... > LibreOffice > Advanced

At this point the well-known error message no longer appeared (general rejoicing) and LibreOffice Base did start, but when I tried to create a new Database, the whole application crashed, restarted, tried to recover, crashed again, restarted, ...

This was fixed with an update to the latest stable (5.3) or newest (5.4) version of LibreOffice.

So right now everything works. Thanks for the advice.

I had the same problem.... very confusing, though I solved it!

You have to install the entire JDK from Oracle website the link:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.h tml

BUT - most important - you must uninstall any java from Mac before installing the JDK, otherwise it would not work!

Remember - after uninstall previous java's, restart the mac and then install JDK.

I did uninstall my previous java installed, restarted Mac, then installed JDK and now it wrks perfectly!

Good luck!

There are two different Java distributions for end users: one from Apple, and one from Oracle. They don't overlap in function. Neither one is installed by default.

The Apple Java runtime (version 6) is needed to run bare jar files and older standalone Java applications. Newer Java applications have a runtime built in and don't use Apple's.

The Oracle Java runtime (version 8 or later) is a web plugin only. It's used to run web applets and Web Start applications. It cannot run standalone applications. To determine whether it's installed and up to date, look for a preference pane named "Java" in System Preferences. If it's present, open it. It will launch the "Java Control Panel." Select the Update tab.

Hi Level 10,

I got my hopes up when I found this post, but it really did't help me ... I run El Capitan on my Pro, and it is quite frustrating to get these messages after having shelled out on a serious upgrade spurred by too many messages about lacking support for this that and the other....

Is there any hope for me to get Libre (database) running on my Pro??

Kind regards,

Bard Thomas
