You will need an audio interface that has several audio inputs and outputs.. in order to use one or both of the FX boxes you have...

There are then several ways to use extrnal fx units with Logic...

Here's two to get you going....

Method #1

Old school mixer method...

Connect your FX box's inputs and outputs to separate inputs and outputs of your Audio Interface.. (Stereo or mono depending on how many i/os your audiom interface can handle..

Set up a Aux bus in Logic and route the Send of the bus to the inputs from the FX unit and the outputs from the FX unit to the Return of the Aux Bus...

Now adjust the send levels for the bus for each track you wish to use the FX on...

Method #2

Use the I/O plugin....

(From the LP9 manual but works much the same way in LPX)

HI thanks for the reply

I have the Komplete audio 6 interface from native instruments

from what i can gather, i don't have any inputs/outputs that the efx unit can connect to the interface.

I'm using a usb 2.0 cable plugged into my mac and the power adaptor into a socket. so i don't have direct link from the fx unit to the interface.

am i best buying a interface with multiple usb inputs/outputs so i connect it via there instead of connecting it to the mac?

thank you!

The Audio 6 does have the capability to add an effects loop by using output 3 and 4... to the fx unit's inputs and then inputs 3 and 4 from the FX unit's outputs..

But I don't know if the Audio 6 actually allows access to these via its USB or if it only passes two channels back and forth to your DAW..

To know for sure, check how many outputs and inputs are available in Logic. If you can see inputs 3 and 4 as well as 1 and 2.. you can make it work though the fx units would have to be chained together...and both go through i/o 3 and 4 for stereo or one each via 3 or 4 for mono....

Hi art of sound!

thank you for the help along the way! you say loop by using output 3 and 4, do i need any additional cables for this, i.e Audio cable or mini jack to jack?

could you please simplify the last paragraph of your comment?

ill make a output of the 3 and 4 track and try the same for the i/o

will pay you $20 if we can get it working!:)

thank you

Simple method..

1) Take an output from your FX unit and connect it to an input of your audio interface

2) Take an output from your audio interface and connect it to the input of your FX unit..

3) In Logic Pro X... in an audio or Software instrument track... add in an FX slot.... the I/O plugin... found under the Utility sub menu when you click on the FX button

4) In the I/o plugin interface that will appear... select the input and outputs you used in your Audio Interface...

5) Now when a sound is played through that channel it will go out of Logic, into your FX unit.. and out of your FX unit and back into Logic...

Thats it...

Now of course you may wish to use an Aux bus to do this rather than put the FX directly on the channel.. or work with stereo pairs rather than mono... but for now just play around with it and use the Ping function in the i/o interface to adjust for latency etc...

Thats great, I'm following this fully, the only thing you is tripping me up, connecting an output of the Fx unit to an input on the interface,

which cable do i need for this, as your standard audio cables are too large for the unit. The unit only has inputs/outpouts for a mini jack connection. Which the interface does not a mini jack input connection available. Is there an adaptor I perhaps need to connect the two?

thank you guys so much and ill be sure to donate to Gosh!

Yes Ben.. as your FX units are basically Eurorack style...

You will need 3.5 mono to 1/4 mono cables or adaptors.. to go to and from the FX unit to your audio interface...

For full stereo operation you will need four of them....

Note: The cables themselves need to be mono ones not stereo ones..

Something like this....

Assuming you are talking about the USB cable between your Audio 6 and your Mac? Yes, you will still need that to get the audio to and from your Audio 6 and your Mac and then into Logic for example..

The cables you are buying, are just to get audio to and from your Audio 6 and your FX Units.... not the Mac... The USB cable handles all audio signals between the Audio 6 and your Mac.

Please note: Due to the limitations of your Audio 6 (which only has four physical audio inputs/outputs...) you may only be able to connect one of your FX units at a time.. (depending on what you use the other inputs on your Audio 6 for.. like a mic , guitar or external Synth..) unless you chain them together... as in..

FX unit #1 Outputs to FX Unit #2 Inputs... then FX Unit #2 Outputs to Inputs on Audio 6... then... Outputs on Audio 6 to Inputs on FX Unit #2 and Outputs on FX Unit #2 to Inputs on FX Unit 1

You will need extra cables to achieve this... such as 3.5 mono to 3.5 mono cables to connect the FX Units together...

Bear in mind the audio signal will then flow through both FX Units...so you must decide which order to place them in the chain to get the desired workflow you wish...

Hope this makes sense... It probably will make more sense once you wire everything up and play with it all 🙂

Hi Nigel

Just received the cables, before opening the I/O pluggin. I need to insert the jack into input 1 and output 1 on the FX unit.

Do i only use one input of each cable going into the Komplete 6? so there is an input in each input 1 and input 2 connecting to my fx unit?

So the setup looks like this, 2 cables, each of which jack input is in the Output and Input on the Fx unit leading to the 3m input on the interface as Input 1 and 2? (i have 2 spare 3m inputs) from the cable, or it would need 4 inputs on the interface, all not connecting to 1 and 2.

Hope this makes sense!

thank you !
