how do i stop my photos from being deleted from all my devices when i delete them off my phone

If you use Photostream to sync between devices rather than iCloud, you will not lose images on Mac, etc, if you delete from camera roll on your phone. Switch off iCloud on all devices and enable Photostream. Once they have synced, the master copy will be on your Mac in Photos (top level) and you can remove them from camera roll/PStream without losing them. It could also save you money on your iCloud subscription if you are trying to store many images.

Set up as follows:

On phone/iPad: Settings > Photos & Camera > switch off iCloud and enable Photo Stream

On Mac: iCloud > Photos > Options > same as above

No it is not - your information is for using iCloud Photo Library - Tynegal's information is for using MyPhotoStream - two different services that operate totally differently - both statements are correct for the service they relate to

Both suggestions are different and each device is different - in Photos for the Mac both are controlled in the Photos preferences ==> iCloud - on IOS devices they are controlled in the settings for iCloud ==> Photos

image is stored on iCloud and the "Copies" are then shown on my iMac and

other devices.

I followed previous information and a great deal of space on my Wifes

iPhone was released. It took awhile for photos to transfer to iCloud but

she went from no storage to Gigabytes of storage.

I tried to stop Photostream as a result and get a message that the photos

will be deleted if I do so. Further research led to inconclusive results.

So I left Photostream on and iCloud is also on.

Additionally we have two iMacs on our system. Which iMac would be the main

computer for PhotoStream?

My guess is that you are using iCloud Photo Library and if that is correct then that is the way ICPL works and why it exists - it syncs libraries on mulciple devices keeping them all the same - any change made on any device is made on all including additions, deletions and edits

If that is not what you want then you should not be using ICPL

For devices with limited storage you set them to use optimized photos keeping the originals only on iCLoud Photo Library and any device with large storage available

If you're using iCloud Photo Library you can't. iCPL is a way to sync images between all devices using iCPL. The only way to do what you want is to stop using iCPL on all devices

or

stop using iCPL on your iPhone and manually upload photos in the future to you library via the USB cable.

Disable iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone, if you do not want the Photos Library on your Mac, other devices, and your iPhone to be in sync. Then you can delete the photos on your devices individually.

As I posted two trivial options

1 - If that is not what you want then you should not be using ICPL - turn ICPL off on any device you do not want to sync and no changes on that device will be synced to any other device - it will be just stand alone

Or

2 - For devices with limited storage you set them to use optimized photos keeping the originals only on iCLoud Photo Library and any device with large storage available - this is the choice most people make so the connivence of syncing is there but space is not an issue
