I am trying to store some photos on my iCloud drive so that I can delete them from my iPhone. Here is what I'm doing, but it's not working:
Settings, iCloud, Photos, then I'm turning on the iCloud Photo Library.
I am under the assumption that once I do that, the photos in my camera roll should upload to iCloud?
Nothing is happening and when I go to the Shared section, there are no photos.
What am I missing or not doing correctly? Thanks.

What is the shared section on my phone, in photos on my iPhone?
I opened the photos app on my mac, but it's weird, not all of the 78 photos are there?
I was looking in Finder under iCloud, assuming they'd be there.
I guess I'm looking at this differently than the way it actually acts? To me, if I have photos on my phone and transfer them to the cloud, then I should be able to delete them off of my phone and see them in the shared section. But it sounds like that doesn't happen?
I'm not sure what you mean by "shared section on my phone"
*When* you create shared albums, they will appear in Photos under the Shared tab. Is that what you mean? There are none there by magic or be default.
Do you have the iCloud library enabled on the Mac? System Preferences > iCloud > Photos
In Finder you are looking at the iCloud drive, which is unrelated to Photos.
You aren't transferring photos to the cloud, you are SYNCING them. They remain on BOTH devices. The cloud AND your phone.
You really should read up on how the iCloud works.
I know this is old, but I just looked at my iCloud settings and the iCloud photo library is not on when I check the settings.
I'm going to read more about iCloud as my thick head can't fully understand because I think it should work a certain way.
On a side note, I'm having syncing issues with my messages on my phone to my mac. I went into iCloud on my mac and want to sign out, then sign back in. But when I go to sign out, it's telling me I'm going to lose my iCloud documents, etc. I cancelled, is it ok to log out, will my saved items be there upon logging back into iCloud?
Are they on iCloud.com now?
You're only going to "lose" the synced documents on the phone. If they are synced correctly, they will be still be available on the cloud. Once you sign back in, the sync starts again.
Bottom line, signing out of iCloud on a phone DOES NOT delete anything on iCloud, only the phone.
Sorry, it was on the iMac that I wanted to sign off of iCloud. I guess same thing, whatever is on the cloud will stay there?
Correct. Signing out from any device does not by itself, delete anything from iCloud.
