I did not know you were referring to an external optical drive. Do you have any blank media you can test with? Is this an optical drive that reads and writes media? What brand? With it plugged in and on. You should be able to go to the apple, about this mac, more info, usb and it should show up. You could try a pram reset. in case it's a usb problem. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

OK. In system preferences CDs & DVDs. It should, in the different boxes say anything except ignore. Also in utilities, disk utilities, you should see the optical drive below the hard drive. It should also show in about this mac, more info, serial-ata. Does it? Try a pram reset and SMC reset. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063 https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295 Then check again. If it shows up in ether, about this mac or utilities, take note of make and model. Post it. You might need ,if you have an install disk, need to reinstall the operating system.Just in case the driver for it did not get installed. This should not delete any personal files. But having a backup is always a good idea.

Hi To be honest I don't know if the cd rom worked when I bought it . I could not up grade my os on line so I ordered the cd and thats when I noticed it didn't work. I tried PRAM now the cd stays in for 35 seconds was 25 to 30 seconds before.I downloaded the up grade to a flash drive and up graded the os I did this upgrade before I received the cd.I tried a cleaning kit but it ejected the cd also so I don't know if it helped or not. I could here it spinning though. altho I can't here the regular ones spin

Hi I am sure that the cd/dvd rom worked because I got it from sears online website. Could it possibly be with the OS upgrade? I wish I would have tried the cd rom when i bought it,so I would know for sure.I am not sure what OS I had when I got it I just did an checked for a upgrade. This is my first mac and I don't know to much.

Just so it is clear, this drive is inside your computer (= internal), not at the end of a cable outside your computer (= external)? I ask because usually people who know enough about replacing an internal optical drive will know more about their computers. I also have not heard of Sears selling replacement internal optical drives. Dishwashers, yes; screwdrivers, yes.

Hi I tried everything you asked, does it matter if I used an external dvd drive to reinstall the OS X? It showers up in utilities as a MATSHITA=CD-RW CW-8221. under SER[AL-ATA it doesn't say the same thing, it has 2 boxes one says serial ATA device tree and intel ICH7-M AHCI with a drop down list saying HGST HTS721050A9E630.The second box is a large one with a lot of information. it seems to be my hard drive. after looking around a little my drive is listed under ATA

In about this mac, system profiler, Serial ATA. The first box is the path with the hard drive below it. Then the path with the optical just below that. The optical drive should say the same as if does in disk utilities. When clicked on you get more info on it. If you put in a cd and then open system profiler. It should now show as on. If your install disk reads in the external optical drive. It should also read in the internal one. If you can hook up an external optical drive with no problem, it may be that the one you got from sears is defective. One of the things that make an optical drive eject a disk without mounting it is, it cannot read the disk. This could be a software problem, as to the driver. Or the laser in the drive is weak.

Hi again I read a lot on the web that after updating to 10.6.8 made a lot of other people having the same problem. I don't know if the cd drive worked before I updated the OS I just opened the computer and it search for updates and said to update so I went to apple site where it had the update and i downloaded it to a flash drive and installed it and thats when I noticed that the cd drive didn't work because I was trying to load software for my printer.I ordered the OS X snow leopard used my external cd drive to re install the OS and still had the same problem. and then I went to this site where we met.So is there a driver that I can get for my cd drive?

The drivers are supplied with software or updates. Normally you would not go and get the update and install to a flash drive as it comes by way of software update direct from apple. If when you got the Snow Leopard retail disk, you did an erase of the hard drive and then installed. You get the drivers needed. All updates should be done thru software update. If you go back to 10.6.3, the retail Snow Leopard and then update. you will get about 8 or 10 updates to get to 10.6.8 Some are security, some are system, some are Itunes and safari.

When you go to the apple in the top left and click on software update. It will run a progression bar to read the computer and then show updates(if any) for your computer. Sometimes you get the updates in groups of more than one at a time. With the option to check the ones you want or install all of them. Also as update become available, apple will automatically display an update as ready to download. Giving you the option to do so it you want. After Snow Leopard, all update come from the app store. The only time I have ever use another way is when I have a problem and need to reinstall an update. This I do from apple support, downloads and updates. But there is only a limited supply of updates this way.

I had this happen once. I had to start in safe mode. Boot with shift key down. Then when I got it booted up I went to computer, library. updates. I then deleted the updates, except for Index.plist and Productmetadata.plist. Do not delete those. Emptied the trash and restarted. Do you remember the update that was trying to install when this happened? If you get this far and run the software update again and it is more than one. Install them one at a time. If it will not let you do this, then you will need to use the install disk to reinstall. This does not delete your personal files. but will get it to boot up
