Photos transfer and select more than one photo on my iphone

Can I really only select one photo at a time in iOS El Capitan?
I had a Samsung Galaxy - I could just touch on a photo and a Tick sign would appear in top right hand corner. I'd then be able to do the same to multiple photos and e.g email, dropbox, delete.

I wish to plug in my iPhone to my Macbook and with my laptop...

> open up the photos folder on my iPhone.

> select the photos I wish to transfer
> delete photos from the iphone

the iPhone seems to want to copy all photos over?

Then I get a message saying not possible - not enough room on dropbox. But what has dropbox got to do with this??

This is strange to me my experience is XP, PC 2003-2015 and prior to that loyal Apple Mac user from 1998-2002 (when it was the superior intuitive platform)

Please advise! I am feeling very frustrated. This should be a simple procedure.

iPhone 5, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), Macbook Pro to iPhone - come in!

Not sure what you are doing exactly, but you should be importing your photos to the Photos app. When you connect to import, all new importable photos will display. If you do not want to import all of them, then you can click on them to select the ones you do want to import (this is all done in Photos on your Mac).

If you are using Image Capture, you would follow the instructions in this support article:

Image Capture: Transfer images and other items from your device

Either way, you are doing the selecting on the Mac, not on the device.

But what has dropbox got to do with this??

You must have some option selected in Dropbox's Import option. Disable everything in that Import pane.

User uploaded file

If that doesn't fix the job uncheck this checkbox in the General preference pane:

User uploaded file

In the Photos Import window just click on the images you want to import. A blue check will appear and you'll be able to import just those selected:

User uploaded file

The key is to disable Dropbox.

Thanks, I've turned off Dropbox which was causing some confusion.

Where about on the machine does Photos store imported photos? I need to know so I can attach it to an email via Gmail.

This is so frustrating.

also it's 'importing 265 items' I did not sanction this!

ALSO
I found name of file via Photos
I searched for IMG_0600.JPG in my Finder
no result! Apart from an old photo from 2014 that has same name.

I am not having a good time Apple.

When you import into the Photos library they are copied into the library package. The inside of the package is not available to the user. If you want a photo out of the library for use with another application you export the original to the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ Export X Unmodified Originals... menu option.

This user tip explains more on accessing images for use outside of the library. It applicable to both iPhoto and Photos libraries.

Thanks for letting me know Old Toad

But Apple, I have to Export a photo to edit it in photoshop or email it via Gmail?!?!
Why are Apple making my life more difficult! Time is precious. What happened to their simplicity and efficiency mantra?
I am thinking about defecting to Windows again

AND in Activity monitor it indicates

Of course not. If you want to edit it in Photoshop like we did in iPhoto just purchase the $0.99 External Editors For Photos app which installs an extension in Photos that lets you use any 3rd party image editor in your Applications folder. This user tip explains it in more detail: External Editors in Photos Are Here

To email it with your Gmail account add the Gmail account to your Mail Accounts preference pane:

User uploaded file

In Photos select the images you want to email and click on the Share button and select Mail:

User uploaded file

That will open an new email with the image in the body of the email.

If you're already in Mail click on the Show Media Browser button

User uploaded file

and select the images to email in the next window:

User uploaded file

It's all integrated.

In my Activity Window

Photos Agent is top of list energy impact of 251! Which is massive! The machine is heating up and the fan is now very loud.

Second highest safari is 16.2

I have not even launched Photos Agent! It is doing it own thing. Bizarre. I hate it Why can't i just organise photos like previously with my own standard filing system with my own simple folders. Alas Apple.

Mar 8, 2016 8:23 AM in response to D.M.O'M.73

You can do what you want

If you use Photos then you can not organize your files - that is what Photos does and why you use it

If you want to do your own file organization then do not use Photos - import another way using the finder or image capture or another program and do what ever you want - Photos is not required but if you choose to use it then you have to use it correctly

Photos Agent is launched when you launch Photos. It's a background app that runs even after you close Photos so it can sync with the iCloud features, i.e. My Photo Stream, Shared Albums and the iCloud Photo Library.

Try using the  ➙ Force Quit menu option to force quit Photos. Or you can quit Photos from the Activity Monitor window.

Mar 8, 2016 9:34 AM in response to Old Toad

I had not launched Photos.

Force Quit did not show that Photos was running.
...despite the above Photos had kicked in according to Activity Monitor.
Apparently (according to another thread) it is converting it is converting all previous iPhoto material which is rather concerning.

I hope i will not have duplicates of my photos taking up space on my HDD.

Is it possible to disable Photos and use an alternative that's compatible with El Capitan? If so suggestions please.

Many Thanks

No you won't duplicate space. The two libraries initially share the same data on the HD via hard links so they don't take up twice the amount of space on the hard drive. They can be copied/backed up independently.

New photos added to either library are independent of the other library.

Here's more info on hard links:

Thanks, well at least there no duplicates then unlike with mp3 and iTunes (I'm not a fan)

Now then, crucially - Is it possible to disable Photos and use an alternative importer that's compatible with El Capitan?

If so suggestions please for apps for Importing photos from iPhone to Macbook

ALSO

i tried to attach a photo from Photos
I couldn't access the photos within the folder/icon

Mar 8, 2016 9:57 AM in response to D.M.O'M.73

You can import using image capture or the finder

If Photos launches when you connect a device while that device is connected in Photos uncheck the box to open Photos when this device is connected

and you do not access the contents of the Photos database using the finder - you use the media browser in the lower left of every attach/upload/open window under media ==> photos ==> Photos or you us the Photos applicaiton and export the phoot to a desktop folder
