On itune it say The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported. The SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Please contact Apple for more information.

Do i need a new sim card? the sim currently in it is the one i used before years ago it worked fine. but do they stop working after a while?

NO. Getting a new sim card will not unlock the phone.

The message that you have is that this sim card is not supported in the phone, which actually means that your phone is locked to the carrier.

Which carrier did you use with the phone originally? Did you hack the phone to unlock it? You might have done, because if you hack a phone to unlock it, then as soon as you restore the phone, it will re-lock to the original carrier of the phone and it does not remain unlocked in the same way as it would do if you had approached the carrier to unlock it for you.

You need to find out who the carrier of the phone is and then go and get a new sim card and see if that works in the phone. You then need to approach that carrier and request that they unlock the phone for you.

Only the carrier of the phone can unlock it for you - nobody else and Apple cannot either. Anything else amounts to hacking the phone.

Oh, okay. So would getting a ATandT sim unlock my phone? or do i get t mobile because thats what i last used? what store sold gsm iphone 3g? how do i know what carrier it is?

Getting an AT&T SIM will make your phone usable - but it will not unlock - that is a process that needs to be initiated between you and AT&T

The iPhone 3G was never sold as an unlocked phone in the US. AT&T was the sole carrier for it and they didn't start offering unlocking for iPhones until long after it was discontinued.

Contact AT&T and see if that phone qualifies for unlocking. If you are not a current or former AT&T customer and you can not product proof of purchase for an AT&T "no-commitment" iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, they will most likely tell you to pound salt.
