When the phone is on airplane mode, we usually get a message for any missed call. I've been using iPhone for a while now and I don't get any message. If anybody can help me, please tell me what to do. I'm using iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1.

In airplane mode all communication to and from the phone (cellular, wi-fi, and bluetooth) are completely off. There is no way for the phone to know that it has missed a call or to receive any notifications while it is in airplane mode.

It is not possible. You may want to talk to your friends and get some more details of exactly what they did and what happened.
The closest possible thing I can think of is that calls would automatically go to voicemail while they had airplane mode on (which they would) and then when they turned airplane mode off and had cellular service again they were notified of the voicemails.
No call notification when on airplane mode.
