Text appearing by word as talent is speaking.

The company I work at is doing a Mean Tweets style video and I'm trying to find the simplest option for having the tweet appear below the person speaking. I see in the Custom title there is an option for text to appear by word. There is also an option for the sequencing to be by keyframe. I'm just not seeing a way for the keyframes to allow me to custom time when the words appear. Hopefully that makes sense. Thanks!

It may be possible, but I don't think U would try to do this in the Custom template. As you've noted there is really very limited control over the timing.

If you have Motion, you could create a stack of text boxes with the text sequence behavior (create one and duplicate the rest in new layers). You would need to make notes on the TC for the talent's dialogue, then make in and out points for each of the layers so the words in a sentence (or line of text) would appear sequentially and persist.

An slightly easier way might be simply to stack basic title clips right within FCP – one title clip per word – staggering the clip position according to its place in the line of text. Alignment would be adjusted by sight.

Obviously, it's a fiddly process and there will probably be a post by someone who has superior graphics skills and who will give you some better ideas.

If you're going to do a lot of this, consider third party open caption software. That can range from very expensive to donation software.

Good luck.

If you know how to keyframe parameters, all you need to do is keyframe this Title's Write On Speed parameter:

Word at a Time

The text layout is "paragraph" style which allows for other features like tab stops. (Basically, it is the *basic* Title template that is the default in Motion with a custom write on behavior added.)

It defaults to completely "on" to make it easy to replace the text, then set the Write On Speed to 0 with the playhead at the start of the title; set a keyframe. Then play forward and when a word is spoken, advance the Write On Speed parameter until the word just appears.

This effect does not "auto-center" as words are added, the line of text is centered by its total length. Use multi lines to keep lines short and readable. You can use the Text Inspector to make any design changes to the text that are accessible in FCPX (including 3D text.)
