What kind of playlist are you trying to add songs to? Are you trying to add to a playlist in your library or one that's on an iDevice? In the former case you should be able to add songs to a regular playlist with this icon:

User uploaded file

using either drag-and-drop or right-click > Add to Playlist. You can't use this method to add songs to a smart playlist, with this icon:

User uploaded file

- in this case, you must edit the playlist's membership criteria to modify its contents. Nor can you add songs directly to a playlist folder with this icon:

User uploaded file

- you must add songs to the playlists contained within the playlist.

if you are trying to add songs to a playlist on your iDevice, this should work as long as you've configured the device for manual music management. However, I'd always recommend not doing this - iTunes offers far more flexibility if you use playlists in your library to manage the content of your iDevices and then sync these.

Thanks. This is my library and a playlist on my computer. What I was trying to do was to add albums to a new playlist with this image User uploaded file. Yes I can now add albums to this image User uploaded file(not sure how I actually added it) which appears in the left column as a sub folder of my playlist with the folder image. When I drag an album on drop it on this User uploaded file I will see all the individual songs there and will see all the albums (covers) in this folder User uploaded file. I don't recall seeing any instructions on how to do this so thanks again. When I first added the new playlist all I got was this User uploaded file.

When you create a new playlist it should be listed with the "two notes" icon. From what you describe you've selected Songs view for the playlist and Albums view for the playlist folder. When you select a folder you simply get all the songs that are included in any of the playlists that the folder contains, and can choose to view them with the same options available for individual playlists.
