On a corporate MacBook, updated to OS X El Capitan v. 10.11.3 and it was the worst decision ever

I am on a Corporate machine - MacBook Pro and i decided it's time for a little upgrade from OS X Yosemite since there were lags and bugs that causes the machine to be unresposnive on a daily basis.

But updating to the OS X El Capitan became my worst decision as everything is now missing.

I can't gain access to Finder, Spotlight, Launchpad, Outlook and whatever that is on my dock. My desktop is blank, all files and folders are missing including my wallpaper.

I can only open recent applications through the Recent Items option.

My company's IT is clueless on how to fix it and every day this issue exist means i will have a **** pile of work to finish when i finally get my computer up and running again. Dont blame them since they are operating remote from where i am.

I tried taking matters to my own hand by going to recovery mode to reinstall or repair - none of these works after countless times.

I tried downloading a fresh copy of the OS from AppStore and after completing 6+ GB of download, it says the version of the OS is not available for corporate machines.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue?

Urgent help needed.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

  1. if you have any important files on your Mac that you don't want to lose, I'd back them up first.
  2. agree, uninstall your McAfee. Third party antivirus software is unnecessary, ineffective, and harmful on Macs.
  3. Chrome is not a good idea either.
  4. Have you ever had any "cleaner" type software installed on your Mac, like CleanMyMac or MacKeeper? These can do a lot of damage. That was my first thought when I saw your original post.

If #4 doesn't apply:

I would uninstall McAfee and Chrome, and then repair your HD with disk utility https://support.apple.com/kb/PH22243?locale=en_US.

Then make a backup right away, like with Time Machine.

The report looks pretty complete to me, maybe someone else can comment.

The McAfee was probably installed by your IT department, and it is doing exactly what third-party antivirus software does on a mac, and that is: screw it up.

You'll have to talk to them. Won't do much good. They will insist that your Mac needs AV software (it doesn't).
