Apple Maps freezes on CarPlay

On numerous occasions, CarPlay freezes while using Apple Maps, leaving the screen minutes and miles behind the vehicle location. Stopping the car and unplugging the phone always instantly restores maps to functionality with current location and directions. Any one else with this problem; or any suggestions? Thanks. 6S Plus running 9.2.1 in new 2016 Corvette.

After responding with a similar experience earlier in this post, I think I've figured out a workaround. As I mentioned, I only see the problem when not in turn-by-turn mode, but just displaying my current location - it's during that mode that the map freezes and my location leaves the map displayed on the screen.

After much testing, I've noticed that this happens only when I'm in the orientation mode of direction-always-up. That's the orientation where the map turns to always show your direction pointing towards the top of the screen and the orientation icon is the filled-in arrow, pointing north, WITH the circle around it.

When I put the orientation in the North-Up mode so that the map never rotates, but the direction indicator turns to follow the map, I have yet to have the map freeze up on me. On CarPlay's GUI, this means setting the orientation icon to the filled-in arrow pointing northeast, WITHOUT the circle around it.

I don't prefer this mode to always facing north, but it has yet to freeze up on me, so it's a tradeoff.

The problem is definitely with Apple Maps on CarPlay, and not the car type, or the specific car's firmware, the cable, the USB port, etc. Here's how I know: I've had this problem with an iPhone 7 and now the iPhone X. I had the problem on the iPhone 7 when running 10.x and then 11.x, and now running 11.1.1 on the iPhone X. I also see the problem in two different cars, a '16 VW Golf and a '17 Ford Explorer - exact same problem in both. And yes, I've seen it in random cars that I've rented ranging from Chevy's to Cadillacs.

What I'm seeing: I never see the map lock up while I'm actively following directions to an entered destination. I only see it while there is no destination entered and I'm merely displaying my current location on the screen. But when it happens, I'll suddenly realize that my location indicator is no longer on the screen because the map stopped following me a while ago. And it stays that way until I interact with it.

What causes it: I have not idea - there is no rhyme or reason as to what causes it to freeze. I don't think it has anything to do with interacting with the device because sometimes it will happen after not touching anything for a while. The frequency does not follow a pattern either. Sometimes I can make a whole trip without it freezing, other times, it will happen several times on a short trip.

How to resolve it: Very easy, I just tap the screen, and re-select the orientation to my preferred "icon always pointing up" mode. But then, like I said before, it will happen again even without any subsequent interactions.

Very annoying - looking for a solution to this, but haven't found one.

Still crossing my fingers waiting for the day when Apple will allow Google Maps or Waze in CarPlay.

Same problem. I’ve set the Show Parked Location to OFF thinking that maybe that’s it. I’m surprised that this hasn’t been addressed yet.

I was thinking that maybe it had something to do with the GPS. Can’t figure out if CarPlay uses the GPS location from the truck or the phone so I’ve left the phone out in the open and still have the same problem.

I hope that Apple is working on this. It’s getting distracting having to tap the icon over and over again when Maps loses my position.

Been working on this problem since I got my 2018 Odyssey EX-L nearly three weeks ago. Have tried several different suggestions to no avail. Have two iPhone 5c's IOS 10.3.3 . CarPlay maps works 75% of time on one phone (usually kicks out with error message: "Unfortunately com.honda.auto.navigationservice" has stopped). Works only 5% of time with the other phone, kicking out almost immediately with "No Internet Connection," but sometimes works a bit longer until it gets the error message: "Unfortunately com.honda.auto.navigationservice." Both phones have identical settings.

I have similar problem. I have an iPhone 7plus with iOS 10.2 and a 2016 Accord. The Apple CarPlay crashes often when making or receiving calls. Or when changing from FM to pandora. The thing that seems to fix it is restarting both the iPhone and the car and sometimes that is not possible especially in the middle of the fwy. It crashes to often and should not happen.

I have a similar issue with a 2017 Audi A4 when using Carplay. Both the Apple Maps app (on car's screen) and the Waze app (on the phone screen) will show the car miles/minutes behind the actual vehicle location. The issue only happens when Carplay is engaged. If I disable Carplay in the car's settings, both the Apple Maps and Waze apps will show the correct GPS location on the phone itself. It's as if Carplay is doing something to delay the reported GPS location. I'm currently using iOS 10.2.1. Since the car is brand new, I don't know if the issue would have occurred with previous iOS versions.

Same exact issue with iOS 10.3.2 with CarPlay in the 2018 Audi A5. On a longer trip recently the app was over 15 miles behind over time. Any interaction with the phone such as skipping a song, selecting a new playlist, or simply changing the mode on the map will start this incredibly annoying and dangerous delay. If I unplug and reconnect the phone (USB), the map catches up immediately UNTIL a message comes in, I skip a song, or literally do anything else. It can be as innocent as receiving a reminder.

I also have the same issue with both an iPhone 7 and iPhone 6S in an Audi A5 2018. This is definitely a CarPlay issue. I have often missed turns because of this and have to stop my car on the side of the road to try and fix it. I started using the Google Maps Navigation that is built into the car since it seems to be more reliable and does freeze while driving.

Hello drjwr,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that Maps in CarPlay isn't working correctly, and becoming unresponsive. I suggest that you follow through the steps outlined below to begin troubleshooting the issue.

Get help

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

Set up CarPlay to use with your iPhone

Take care.

Nope. These are all first steps that anyone with common sense tries and that don't apply. It's a chronic problem, which also includes instructions to U-turn when already going the correct direction. There may be a firmware issue with the car -- new 2016 Vette -- that delays GPS data transmission (Maps sometimes rotates around an intersection looking for the car while I'm at a stop) but I'm waiting for a scheduled service.

As an overall comment, Apple Maps works very poorly on CarPlay.
