Apple pay wont work at whole foods but works on watch

Hi recently my apple pay stopped working at whole foods.

• I get a message 'hold phone near the reader'
• Funny thing is when I use my watch it work (both watch and phone are present)
• I tried a soft reset on my phone but still no dice
• software up to date 9.2.1

Any ideas? could my NFC be broken on my phone? How can I tell?
