AOL VERIZON.NET EMAIL unable to set up as IMAP account in OSX (yosemite or el capitan)

I was forced by Verizon to migrate my Verizon.net email id to AOL in February. In doing so, you have the option to use IMAP or POP. Verizon did not support IMAP so I obviously decided to use IMAP for the "new" email account (same email id though). I saved my email and created new accounts on my iPhone and IPAD. It set them up as IMAP and it worked as it was supposed to.

On my IMAC and Macbook, it just doest work. OSX automatically sets up the AOL (verizon.net) account as a POP account and not an IMAP account. I have not been able to figure out how to get around that. Even when setting it up manually, it sets it up as a POP account.

Apple has to update OSX to allow the user to set up an AOL verizon.net email id as IMAP. Verizon did not support IMAP which is why i believe this is still an issue. I deleted the old verizon.net email account on my macbook and iMac. When I set up the new account, bingo, OSX sets it up as a POP account no matter what you do.

Anyone able to help??

I'm having the same issue described here a year ago. I'm trying to switch my Verizon/AOL email to IMAP -- no problem whatsoever on mobile devices, but when I click "AOL" on my Macbook pro and put in the email address and password, it says it doesn't recognize the email or password (the same ones that worked just fine on other devices.)

When I try to do a manual setup, it defaults to POP -- and even if I manually change the server and port settings to the IMAP settings, it's not acting like IMAP.

At this point I'm stumped. Any ideas?

I finally solved this issue with help from AOL's tech support.

After reconfiguring my POP Verizon account as IMAP using AOL's manual settings (How do I manually configure the settings in email applications to send and receive my Verizon.net mail? - AOL Help), I was still getting the "Unable to verify account name or password" error. That's when AOL suggested that my issue might be caused by adding 2-step authentication, which I had recently done. So here's what finally worked:

  1. Sign in at https://i.aol.com.
  2. Under Account Security, next to 2-Step Verification, in the right-hand column, click on Edit.
  3. In the CONNECT APPS section, click on Edit.
  4. Select the app for which you wish to set up a specific passwords (AIM, iOS Mail, Android Mail) and also select the device (iPhone, Android, Mac, PC).
  5. Click on Create.
  6. In the pop-up window displayed, you will see the specific password chosen for your application. You will use it once, just type it into the AOL password field. Please note: Hyphens are included in the password and must be entered. [When you update the password in Mail's account preferences, make sure that you enter it for both incoming and outgoing servers, and also make sure that your email address is filled in on the User Name fields for both, which may be blank by default.]
  7. Create as many specific passwords, for each application you currently use.

I can't even set up aol with my apple email program. every time i try, it get "unable to verify account name or password." i'm running el capitan on both my macbook pro and my 27" iMac. i called aol when i was first forced to change, and they said that they were "working on it." The odd thing is that it works on my iphone and both of my ipads. I HATE aol and I HATE web mail. And the last time I called frontier about it, I talked with someone who had no clue what I was talking about and changed my Frontier password. AARRGGHH!!!!!!!
