Macbook Pro - Power button stuck and laptop won't turn on

Hello,

I'm having several troubles with my Macbook pro. I believe it is a 2011. A couple days ago, I could no longer press the power button. It feels as if it is already pressed down, and nothing I've found online has been able to fix it (trying to bring it up with a piece of tape, turning my laptop upside down). Until this morning, I've been able to restart my laptop manually, and I've been keeping it in sleep mode so that I can still use it. This morning, despite having been in sleep mode, the laptop will not show anything besides a blank black screen. I have checked to make sure that my charger is working, and my laptop is fulling charged, as the indicator light on the charger turns green. When i press the caps lock, no light appears. Please note that for my model of Macbook, I cannot detach the battery. Most fixes include using the power button, which I am unable to do. I am in Honduras without access to an Apple Store or chat support, so any help to fix these issues would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!!

This is a long shot - a very long shot. Your MBP is quite easy to open. All you need is a Philips #00 screwdriver.

I suggest you remove the bottom - ten screws - and disconnect the battery. Just unhook the cable from the battery to the logic board.

• Wait half a minute and reconnect the battery.

• Put the cover back on temporarily without the screws and see if the computer will power up.

If the computer boots, turn it off and put the ten screws back on.

Here's a guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Early+2011+Battery+Repl acement/5116

(Do steps 1, 2 and 3 in these instructions.)

p.s. You do not need a "spudger" to lift the battery connector off the logic board - a finger nail will do just as well.

Good luck.

There is no software solution to a malfunctioning power button. The best option is to open the MBP and take out the power button and replace it.

If you cannot get a replacement you can try to lubricate the power button and see if you can restore functionality. Non-residue electrically cleaner might work or a light oil such as Kroil or Liquid wrench. There is an element of risk associated with this approach.

Ciao.
