If you did not have a PUK on it then you should not have any issue.
I Have been updating my 4s for three years with no sims card. This is the first time it got hung up.
Any way to back out the upgrade?????
If you have an iPhone there is no way to restore or upgrade without a SIM (not necessarily active) being in the slot. And you cannot back out of the upgrade.
It is a phone which is why it requires this. It has been this way since the first iPhone in 2007. It does not seem to have affected sales.
A Restore/Update has always required it. I haven't tried an OTA minor update (such as 9.2 to 9.2.1) without a SIM but more significant ones require it.
