Editing iTunes .xml file

Used to be able "I think" to just edit iTunes .xml file when moving library. Is this not the case anymore? I just had to replace a harddrive - folder structure is all the same except for the name of the drive. Looks like I need to import the .xml now to build the .itl? Is this correct?

As long as the structure hasn't changed you should be able to open the .itl, right-click a broken track and use get info, locate the track when prompted, and then let iTunes repair the rest of the missing files when it asks.

Note that Get Info > File tab of a broken track should let you see that path that iTunes is expecting to find the track at.

The new drive has to be 100% identical as far as iTunes is concerned. Identical name, etc. You have to fool iTunes into thinking you are using the same drive.

You can still edit the .xml but then you will still have to have the correct path. You will lose ratings, play counts, date added. Create a new library (use option+start) and import the .xml. IMHO you are much better off doing the drive name thing.
