Hi Matt,

As far as I can see that is all the way it should be - so this is not the same root cause as I had. If you've tried the plist deletion fix I think your only option is to go through Apple support. As others have said, you need to insist that it's an account issue, which qualifies for free support. And you will need to be persistent because they have to escalate it through two levels. You will need to chase them on a daily basis and it will be best if you can persuade the support person to give you their direct phone line and/or direct email address - otherwise you have to navigate their phone system every time. You need to be very, very persistent - but of course perfectly calm and polite...

Hi polarbreeze1,

Firstly sorry for spelling your name wrong in my previous post.

When I read your original explanation I thought en0 should always be Ethernet.

(Probably because for as long as I can remember with any Mac Ethernet has been en0 on my devices).

My Network Utility (Applications/Utilities) show it this way.

As does the System Info > Hardware > Network > Locations.

The order or activity in System Preferences > Network does not seem to make a difference.

I notice that you do not list an Ethernet Card at all in your last post

According to the Apple guy, the issue is whether there's an "en0" present or not. It's not a question of which device it is assigned to. It sounds mysterious but it did work completely and immediately after trying for weeks to find the fix. There is no ethernet listed for me because I didn't have the USB ethernet adapter plugged in at the time.

Hi polarbreeze1,

Thanks for that info.

It eventually dawned on me that the MacBook Air for instance does not even have an Ethernet port.

Hi,

It is entirely possible.

Since OS X10.8.2 you have needed the Serial Number to be read from the Logic/Mother board.

This gives you a Device Specific login to the iMessages server.

This can be one reason that the login does not work.

If the Board have been replaced the Serial Number may not have been "flashed" back to the new board.

If this is not the issue then it has been noted that in Yosemite and El Capitan at Upgrades and Updates some people lose contact with the server.

You can test in another Mac User account to prove it is not your ID.

You can test with another Apple ID to prove it is not the Mac.

It might be the en0 number issue polarbreeze1 has raised.

Prior to that info it always took a reset of the iMessages server by the people at Apple Support (Apple Care)
