Connect to Windows PC with a crossover cable
I want to transfer a pile of old files from a Windows Vista PC to my MacPro with a crossover cable. Does anyone know how to set the two units up to achieve this?
MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Just to be clear, you are aware the Mac can't read the Windows files ?
Crossover cable .... haven't used one of those in a long time.
If you don't know how to network the two... it would probably be much easier to use a flash drive or another external drive.
The article OS X Yosemite: Connect to a Windows computer from a Mac should give you an overview (see the links for details).
Also, albeit for an older Mac OS X version, the web page http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3022.html could possibly be of interest.
Instead of a direct Ethernet cable, one could connect via two LAN ports of a router/switch.
An alternative solution could be the installation of an FTP server on the PC side.
Thanks for your inputs, and so quickly. I spent $70 today on a Seagate external drive and Time Machine seems to like it!
