I have a LG LCD TV with one HDMI/DVI port

I want to buy the Apple TV to connect to this TV, but not sure it will work. Does anyone have experience with connecting an LG LCD TV to Apple TV? I tried a Sony DVD Blu Ray streaming player and it was giving me Invalid format. There is one HDMI/DVI port, no other, so I am not sure how the Apple TV will work?

It sounds like you should be more specific about what type of port it is. It is not likely that you have one HDMI/DVI port because HDMI and DVI are very different kinds of ports, with different shapes and number of pins.

If you don't know, just post the model number of the TV as previously suggested so that we can try to look up the manual and find a port diagram. This is important because so far, all you have said is "LG LCD TV" and the problem with that is LG has been making LCD TVs for many years, which means there are huge differences between their really old and really recent TVs. That makes it hard to assume what you might have.

An Apple TV should have no problem connecting to any LG LCD TV made in the last few years, so you might have an older one that might need an adapter.

Based on the manual and specifications of your tv it should work. Not sure why the Sony player did not but one possibility could be your TV does not support 1080p format which the player could be outputing and display the message.

I would suggest you purchase the Apple TV from an Apple Store so if under the remote chance you cannot get it to work, they will take it back no questions asked within 14 days.

I found the manual for this model, on the LG website. The port diagram indicates that the TV has an HDMI port on the left side. This is where the Apple TV should be plugged in, and it should work fine there.

In the manual I now see why it is labeled an HDMI/DVI port. It is really an HDMI port, but it can work with a cable that has HDMI on one end and DVI on the other (this is not typical or common). You should consider it an HDMI port.

It isn't obvious why the Blu-ray player had a problem. It should have worked fine too.

The main problem I see is that there is only one HDMI port, but you want to plug in both a Blu-ray player and an Apple TV. You might consider using an HDMI switcher box so that multiple devices can be connected to the TV's single HDMI port.

Today, HDMI has become much more of a standard so most new TVs now have 3 to 5 HDMI ports.
