I found the manual for this model, on the LG website. The port diagram indicates that the TV has an HDMI port on the left side. This is where the Apple TV should be plugged in, and it should work fine there.
In the manual I now see why it is labeled an HDMI/DVI port. It is really an HDMI port, but it can work with a cable that has HDMI on one end and DVI on the other (this is not typical or common). You should consider it an HDMI port.
It isn't obvious why the Blu-ray player had a problem. It should have worked fine too.
The main problem I see is that there is only one HDMI port, but you want to plug in both a Blu-ray player and an Apple TV. You might consider using an HDMI switcher box so that multiple devices can be connected to the TV's single HDMI port.
Today, HDMI has become much more of a standard so most new TVs now have 3 to 5 HDMI ports.
