Airport Extreme Constantly Has to Be Reset

About four times a day, our wifi stops working and it's the Airport Extreme, not the cable modem. When it stops working, I unplugged and went directly into the modem and service is fine.

Driving me nuts! Anyone know the solution?

Thanks!

If you look around at other posts on the forum, you will see any number of issues with Cox and their recent implementation of IPv6 into their service. It is not hard to see that Cox users are having a number of issues......while users with Time Warner and Comcast are not. This points to Cox doing something different in their IPv6 implementation, but I'm not on Cox, so I can't provide details on that.

Cox seems to be telling users that the AirPorts are not compatible with their service....and has even posted a notice on their website to that effect.

You can disable the IPv6 Internet connection that is being delivered by Cox by changing a setting on the AirPort router. This might help temporarily, but unless Cox is implementing more changes soon, you won't be able to realize the benefit of IPv6 from Cox, since you won't be using the service that you are paying for.

As far as I can tell at this time, Cox is telling user that they will need to use another brand of router if they want to use the IPv6 connection. You might want to discuss that with Cox.

Are you using a Mac with a recent operating system installed on the device like El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, or Mountain Lion?

The SB6190 is a new modem, so we don't know much about how that product is behaving. Another popular model, the SB6141 is well known as not being that co-operrative with Apple routers....or vice versa depending on your view. Here's just a sampling of that model on a quick forum search:

Well you can:

  1. Make sure you don't have EM interferences, like microwave running (if you're on 2,4GHz)... Every time my microwave would be running it would disconnect many 2,4GHz devices!
  2. You can try to switch to 5 GHz (less prone to interferences/neighbours)
  3. You could reset your Airport (Airport Utility | Click your Airpoirt | Edit | Base Station (on the menu) | Restore default settings).. (take note of your settings first and do a backup before with File | Export Configuration File)
  4. ... or you can replace it, just like I did yesterday: My 5th generation was always a bit flaky, worst in the past year. So I got a 802.11ac and so far: WiFi is very stable ... althouth I don't wanna jinke the situation 😉

What happens if you turn off the WiFi on the computer and connect it directly to one of the three LAN <--> ports on the back of the Extreme? Same issue?

What model of Extreme do you have? Is this the current "tower" shaped version, or one of the older "flat" or "square" versions of the Extreme?

If you have one of the older flat or square versions, what is the model number of the Extreme? If you are not sure, look on the bottom of the Extreme. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.

What is the make and model number of the modem that you are using? We ask because some modems....and the AirPort routers just don't seem to get along very well together for some users.

Who is your Internet Service Provider? Most ISPs are in the process of implementing new IPv6 connection capabilities into their service, and this has caused some disruption issues for some users. A different setting for IPv6 on the AirPort might help if the issue points in that direction.

Finally, we have seen some WAN port negotiation issues with the newer AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule models. Unfortunately, there are not really any known "fixes" for this issue.

I can tell you how to disable the IPv6 connection for now, and that should help with keeping a better connection.....check my last post above, I just wanted to make sure that I provided the correct instructions for making the change......and that means that I need to know what operating system you are using at the present time on the computer that you use to administer the AirPort.

Are you using a Mac with a recent operating system installed on the device like El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, or Mountain Lion?

On a Mac, you would.........

Open AirPort Utility

Click on the picture of the AirPort router

Click Edit in the smaller window that appears

Click the Internet tab at the top of the next window

Click the Internet Options button near the bottom of the window

Change the setting for Configure IPv6 from Automatic to Link Local Only

Click Save, then click Update to save the new settings and give the AirPort a minute to restart
