.MOV files not playing

A few weeks ago I had not trouble playing any of my .mov files (files I created using iMovie) Now all of a sudden I can not get them to play in Quicktime, or Quicktime 7, or VLC player. I'm at a loss, not sure what to do. I've tried searching and did the un-disable plug-in, still not luck. Any advice?

Your description of the the problem implies that either

  1. all of the media players have suddenly stopped working,
  2. all of the files have suddenly become corrupted, or
  3. there is some sort of a hardware or software conflict preventing playback.

Of the three, I would probably start off by investigating the third possibility. I would unplug all non-required peripherals and either boot up in the "Safe" mode or from a minimally configured start-up drive. If playback works correctly, then it is just a matter of locating the hardware or software causing the conflict. If playback still does not work correctly, then I would move on to the first and second possibilities which include corrupted application and/or document files or a corrupted/bad storage/memory/system issues.

Jon, thanks you for your reply. I'll start with your recommendation but at the same time give a little more detail.

These files are in a folder on an external hard drive. The folder contains several movie file types, mp4 (from gopro) (plays fine) .m4v (plays fine), a single .mov (from my cannon powershot camera) that actually plays fine, but the remainder of the .mov (from an iPhone 5) and the.mov which were exported from iMovie all do not play.

Will try your recommendation and reply back... hope it works

Your update regarding playback issues being confined to iPhone 5 recordings suggests this may be a security update issue. Depending on the software you have available, I would try simply copying the audio and video data from the non-playing MOV file container to an MP4, M4V, or new MOV file container. (You might even try simply changing the file extension in the Finder from MOV to MP4 or M4V, but this might not work since you would essentially just be lying to the media player app.)
