What "servicing" was done to it? What was the problem that required it to be serviced?

If possible, try a different USB docking cable to rule out faulty cable as the cause.

When you connect it, watch the iPod's screen. Does it say "Do not disconnect" or "Connected" or give other indication of being connected? Or does it only show the battery charging symbol? Or does it not react at all to being connected?

In a reply in a different topic, you said:

Kenichi. I read your response on my email. thank you for responding. When i connect ipod the main screen comes on but the message on itunes says it does not recognize the ipod. I've searched the web for help and even tried the solutions offered on apple help. these say there may be a problem with the newest version of itunes. thank you for responding.

Well, even my ancient iPods from 2003 and 2004 still work with my newest version of iTunes. What "servicing" was done to your iPod?

As a test, shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices. You can leave standard USB keyboard/mouse connected, if used. Do this to Reset (restart) the iPod.

Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect the iPod to a direct USB port on the computer, by itself. Is there any difference?

I'm having the same issue. I performed the shutdown and restart with no USB devices other then the keyboard/mouse, as you suggested, but I'm getting the same issue.

I've been on the phone with Apple support, and I'm not pleased with the outcome. First, the tech was running me through support steps for an iPod Touch, even though he kept saying "Nano". In the end, he blamed "third party software conflict", and said the only thing he could recommend was trying to get the iPod to sync and update on a different computer. Oddly enough I don't just keep multiple systems hanging around for the benefit of my iPod.

Looking at the webpage Support told me to review (If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support), there is mention of an "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver", but in my Device Manager, there is none:

The only thing listed is this one that is throwing an error, but I can't get it to update. Apple's suggestion at this point: call Apple Support, which was less then helpful.

Any ideas?
