Callers cannot hear me during calls but I can hear everything on their end perfect. Help?

For the past two days my callers have not been able to hear me during a call. I can hear them perfectly clear just, on their end there is complete silence.

How do I fix this?

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.2.1

It is not dirt in the speaker. Ever since I did the update on my iPhone 6, many calls have been screwed up. I can hear the person I called, but they cannot hear me and vice versa. It cannot be some stupid reason like dirt in my microphone because it is happening all 3 iphone 6's in my family. What is going on apple? These are my wife and my first apple products and so far we absolutely hate them. I wish I had my android phone back.

Hi Cditch,

If the problem is switching from your microphone, to your speaker and back again, then it's very unlikely to be a problem with dirt. Especially if all 3 phones are doing the same thing.

It's most likely going to be a software problem, or a problem with your carrier.

Try doing a backup and restoring the phone again through iTunes. See if that make a difference.

Sounds like your main microphone is faulty, or you have something stuck in the holes. On the bottom of your phone, the microphone is behind the holes next to the headphone socket. Give them a clean out and see if there is any difference. A good way to test that microphone is to record a voice memo, and play it back.

If cleaning doesn't solve your problem then you have a couple of options. You can exchange your phone at Apple. Will cost USD$269.

Alternatively, you can forgo post warranty support from Apple and find a reputable independent repairer who can replace the microphone for $50-$70.

Thanks so much for this!

I don't think there is any dirt yet cos the phone is still pretty new but, I will definitely give it a good clean and hopefully that works.

I think getting a newer version of the iPhone will be a good idea cos it seems like this is a recurring problem with the 5s that can't really be "fixed."

Thanks again for your suggestions.
