Bluetooth unavailable post 10.11.4 upgrade

OK so I installed the 10.11.4 upgrade as it was offered in the updates section of the apps store.

Since then, no Bluetooth, so no keyboard or trackpad, unless I plug them in via lightening cables.

I have tried -

1. Removing the Bluetooth plist file and rebooting with no other peripherals plugged in.

2. Reset the SMC.

3. Both 1 and 2 above

Have had no result so still no bluetooth.

I'm not impressed, for a brand new iMac to fail on an Apple update and, more importantly, it's not impressed SWMBO, (She Who Must be Obeyed), who was anti the switch from Windows to Apple anyway. So I lose - no change there then 😀

Whats the next think to try? Hand it back to Apple?

to Peter in Aachen and NDalby :

I have had no more Bluetooth issues after that NVRAM-reset 2-3 weeks ago.

(Strange - by the way - because even though it was discussed by me with Apple … Apple support waived that away and confirmed my belief/suppossition that the NVRAM-reset would be no solution for this)

About that ‘loading bar flickering’.

Before with my old Mac I hardly ever did a shut down etc - nearly always in sleep mode .. so , I am not sure what the normal start-up screen is. Now with the new Mac with SSD I always shut down.

When I switch on the Mac again this is what I see:

- start up sound once (bang) ,

- apple logo , appears (and vanishes ? I forgot)

- a ‘loading bar’ (light stripe that runs from left to right ) runs for 1/3 and vanishes

- the loading bar reappears and now continues till the end (100%)

- then the log-in screen for user(s) appears

That is all. So the ‘loading bar’ appears and disappears and reappears … but that I would not call ‘flickering’

Good news is: No BT-Prob too.

Like Chael I notice:

- start up sound once (bang) ,

- apple logo , appears and few later ‘loading bar’ (light stripe that runs from left to right ) runs for 1/3 and vanishes with logo

- the loading bar (without apple logo) reappears with status 1/3 and now continues till the end (100%)

- then the log-in screen for user(s) appears

I don't regard that as flickering.

By the way: At my iMac 3,2 GHz / 256 SSD it needs 14 seconds to log-in screen

Had no issues with BT since full clean install of 10.11.4 as per my original or 2nd post, updated to 10.11.5 last night with no issues so far. Still have the flickering (or flashing issue if you prefer with the loading bar / Apple logo) at start up. Last communication with the senior engineer at Apple said it wasn't normal but no precedents reported so far or solution to resolve, other than a possible future update.

Mine is slightly different;

  • start up sound
  • apple logo and bar appear, loads to 1/3, logo and bar vanish
  • logo and bar re-appear and disappear at 1/3 for 3-4 flickers (or flashes)
  • logo and bar remains after 4th flicker/flash and then loads to end of bar
  • logon screen for users is presented

I have had the same issue since I got my Late 2015 27" iMac 2 weeks ago.

It started when I restored the new computer from my 2009 iMac, which had to bluetooth issues.

I was on the phone with Apple support for 4-5 hours on 3 different phone calls, with no resolution.

They told me to go to the Apple store where they were better equipped to test the system.

After 3 hours there & them trying everything I had already done (Deleting plist files, Resetting PRAM, and everything else listed here) there still was no BT.

Apple gave me a new computer. I made them try it at the store to make sure BT was working & indeed it was.

I got home set up computer, installed OSX 10.11.5 and it was working fine.

Then I restored again from my previous Mac & BOOM...NO BT..

I have again tried everything & nothing works. I'm forced to use my BT keyboard plugged in & I had to buy a wireless Logitech mouse.

Very very frustrating. You go on here & see all the people having the same issue, yet Apple has not been able to find a fix.

I hope eventually they will.. Maybe with OSX 10.11.12..

I read that your BT is up & running & I hope it will continue to do so..and that mine will be soon too.

Hello HC,

go to terminal, to show all options type: man nvram then press Return

If you want to display the entire contents of the NVRAM, you can execute it with th

-p
parameter: nvram -p then press Return

Comparing it with my running BT-iMac, you or apple-hotliners hopefully may get a hint about that problem:

Tried NVRAM reset 3 times...nothing.

If I restart in safe mode. BT is there.. I tried unticking the 3 options in BT preferences & restarting and that didn't work..Tried doing NVRAM reset coming out of safe mode..Did not work..

I have OSX 10.11.5 installed.. Someone suggested reinstalling from Combo dowmload or going back to 10.11.4 using Combo download. Not sure it will adversely affect system.

Any thoughts on that ?

Thanks again

Henry

You did a "real" NVRAM-Reset, if you have start-gong a second time, did you?

My last idea is to edit the NVRAM by adding the 3 BT-lines from my running iMac
