iPhone SE Bluetooth issues

I have a new iPhone SE and have so far paired it to a 2014 BMW 328i and a 2011 Kia Optima and a 2015 Kia Santa Fe. In all cases, I have terrible quality bluetooth call reception... the audio while on a phone call is extremely scratchy and distorted.

If I pair an iPhone 6S to each of these vehicles (same iOS version - 9.3.1), I do NOT experience these issues and calls are clear.

When I use the iPhone SE to make phone calls outside of Bluetooth, I have no issues and calls are clear.

This bluetooth issue on my iPhone SE does NOT impact Bluetooth music streaming. Only sounds scratchy / distorted with phone calls.

Apple, so far, is blaming the vehicle manufacturers despite there being multiple vehicle models and brands involved.

BMW and Kia state this must be an Apple problem.

Apple Genius bar is absolutely no help -- they state they can't report "software issues" to Apple and are only able to replace bad iPhones.

I'm at a complete loss as to how to get this to Apple's attention so they can fix the issue.

For now, I don't know what to do. All I know is that Bluetooth audio is very important to me in California since it is illegal to use your phone except in a hands free manner.

Anyone know how we can get this information to someone at Apple that can actually do something about it?

Same problem here. I tried the iPhone SE Bluetooth connection with a 2015 Toyota Camry and a 2015 Chevy Silverado and both have terrible phone quality, but good music quality. Same vehicles with an iPhone 6 and 6s Plus work good. I also tried the SE with a Sony SRX-X33 Bluetooth speaker and with it the voice quality was good, but I believe that it is using the music connection.

We can speculate all we want about the cause of this, either signal compression, HFP protocol, CODEC setting, etc...

I would think, as we speak, Apple have already identified the root cause. Their major challenge now is probably to find a quick fix, assuming the problem is not from a circuit design error.

Above all that, it is disappointing that before selling millions of these phones, no one from quality control at Cupertino have thought of bringing an SE phone in their parking lot, and tried to issue a call from any car equipped with bluetooth. They would have identified this "serious" problem with only one attempt.

Again, I made call on my iPhone 4s via Bluetooth and it is not crystal clear.
I think that your problem with iPhone SE Bluetooth voice call contrived, because any apple phones and pads haven't FastStream audio codec for back channel.

And also your headphone equipment also haven't FastStream audio codec for back channel because it is very new. This codec have to be on both sides to crystal clear MONO voice quality Bluetooth signal with Microphone.

In other case if you don't have FastStream audio codec on the iPhone SE and on your headphones your voice call in any case have 8 bit mono quality and it is very bad quality on any iphones.

Did you made compare iPhone 4s, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE Bluetooth voice call quality?

I got my Iphone SE on the first day. Since then, i have problems with the Bluetooth reception in my car (Mazda 3 BM) and with a Plantronics PLT-M20 headset. With the same equipment, iphone 6, 5S, 5 work fine. So i am very disappointed, contacted the support and after all they changed my device. But it is still not working.

I would be happy to know, if it is a Hardware or a Software Problem and when it will be fixed, because i mainly speak in my car or with the BT Headset.

There ist definitely something wrong.

alexpetra or anybody else, please, try to made another test.

Give iphone 6, 5S or 5 or 4s and made VOICE CALL via Bluetooth (it can be facetime Bluetooth calls also if you don't have extra simcards in your old phones) .

Listening to music with Bluetooth have to be always in high quality, but we need to compare Bluetooth VOICE CALLs only (or application where Bluetooth sound goes with microphone).

In any case voice call is 8 bit MONO.

But may be digital-to-analog converter in your Bluetooth headphones works bad with 8 bit and your quality of voice calls too bad in that case?

Apr 13, 2016 6:55 AM in response to denisamir

Denisamir,

Many of us have tried multiple phones including in my case an iPhone SE, an iPhone 6S and an iPhone 5.

The quality on the 6S and 5 are more than acceptable.

The quality on the SE is so bad you can't understand the other caller.

This has been noted several times in the thread. Trying to bash apple over a codec that is used by all iPhone devices is not the answer as if that was the case we would have issues with all iPhones and we don't.

This issue is exclusive to the iPhone SE.

skierrob2,

are the quality OF VOICE CALLS on the 6S and 5 are more than acceptable?

Did you test it by yourself?

Again, I know exactly that BLUETOOTH VOICE CALLS on practically any new headphones works in 8bit MONO and has many noises!!

FastStream audio codec by CREATIVE is only way to make crystal clear sound for back channel. But FastStream codec is a property of CREATIVE LABS and iPhone SE doesn't have it for now and iPhone SE wouldn't have in future!

And also your headphones or CAR HEADPHONES doesn't have FastStream codec.

The 8bit mono voice quality may have different noises and time to time it can be less or more.

Dear denisamir,

Please don't mess up this thread. What you are talking about has nothing to do with this issue and you are misleading other people. It is as simple as it is: the iPhone SE has bluetooth voice call quality problems.

I had all iPhones from the iPhone lineup so far, and experienced this problem few years back with one of them. Apple rolled out a small software update with new audio profiles for bluetooth speakerphones that solved the problem. Hope the solution will be similar this time too.

Apr 13, 2016 7:35 AM in response to skierrob2

skierrob2,

bad to hear it.... It will be difficult for apple to replace or repair all iPhones SE if it is not a software problem....

But the voice quality is a subject to debut and it will be very difficult for apple user to prove the problem to the shop or apple shop to return money....

But if you will wait to fix, your days to return will over.....

Apr 13, 2016 7:34 AM in response to skierrob2

Yes, i think so. I use iphones for years and had no problem at all in understanding the caller with my differently BT headsets. Now its nearly not possibly to understand the caller. I switch my headset off at work, and in my car, i tell the caller to call me back later. That ist really embarrassing.

It is not an irrelevant software function, that maybe fixed in the future, which is acceptable. It is for me, any many others presumably, the most essential function to understand the caller :-)
