iPhone 4S, iOS 9.3
Same thing happened to me. Wifi not working and some apps greyed after the update. Exhausted all possible remedies. Went to Apple - Genius support and they told me it's factory defect and they can't do anything about it. Now I will need buy a new phone as it's 1 year and 3 months old and they won't replace it. It's so unfair that we will shoulder the cost. If they have not sent us the update, we would not have installed it and our phones would have been in perfect condition. They should sort this out ASAP.
You need to insist - I got the same story when this happened a few upgrades ago and, after some plain speaking, apple agreed to replace my iPhone with a "newly refurbished" one with a 90-day warranty.
My genius appointment is in a couple of days time, I guess the "newly refurbished" one will again need replacing...
Oh thank you Juanito. Did you have to pay for the newly refurbished phone given to you as a replacement?
It was given as a free replacement.
Did you have it for less than a year? Did you buy it direct from Apple or Network? What happened to your replacement phone? same issues?
I'd had the iPhone for a couple of years - it was bought from the apple online store.
The iOS9.3.1 update broke the wifi on the replacement iPhone.
Thank you very much Juanito for all the info. It's really very helpful. I will try my luck again. I tried the Stratford Westfield branch and the lady I spoke with was not so helpful. It's really very clear that there is something wrong with the update that they are sending. It's a like a virus that's being sent and damaging their own brand of phone so people will have to buy again. I hope they sort out the problem and recall the ones damaged due to their updates. I'm really hoping their big big BOSSES can hear our complaints and help the ones affected so they can protect their very respected name.
This is absolutely ridiculous. I've tried everything too and nothing works. Apple's own defect in their own software/hardware is costing me real money now. I can barely connect to WiFi when I'm in the same room as my router, not five feet away from it! The signal is always weak and routinely drops me to cell service. ALL of my other devices have no problem connecting. I can stream HD movies without any problems two stories away from my router and on the opposite end of my house. Unbelievable the lack of any meaningful support from Apple on this.
Yeah, it's just annoying as it's not our own fault and we are suffering. I hope they hear our voice. I was wondering where to report this kind of defect so Apple can recall the units that were damaged and will be damaged by the updates they are sending.
This issue is terrible. Since updating my phone 6 with the new iOS update my wifi is crippled.
after trying everything I Fully restored my phone back to factory settings today, which made no difference.
I Can sit next to my partner with her iphone 5 and both out iPads still have full wifi all over the house but the iPhone 6 has 1 bar maybe 2 bars dependant on where I am in the room!. in the past month my phone pretty much now just uses the 4G.
I Bought this phone mainly for its wifi. Now it is not fit for purpose and I will be returning it to the store for a replacement or refund on monday or contacting a soliciter regarding this. Terrible service from Apple who's solution is to pretty much say "have you tried resetting it" or it's your home wifi. All of which I have documented video evidence of multiple other apple devices showing full wifi.
I Now have to pay extra to use 4G rather than wifi as the device is not capable of this basic task. Well with the £500 or so the phone cost me, I think not!
poor show Apple.
I finally got the genius appointment a couple of days ago - completely wiping the iPhone 4S and reinstalling 9.3.1 (and everything else the technician tried) did not fix them problem - the phone sees WiFi networks, but cannot join them.
The apple technician gave two choices - pay $220 for a repair or buy a new phone.
Given that it is clear the upgrade from 9.3 to 9.3.1 caused the WiFi to become unusable, this seems very unfair. The technician justified this by stating that it must be a hardware problem, but did not provide any reasoning for the statement other than to say that the phone is old.
I spoke to the apple store manager who became quite angry at my insistence that it seemed to be an obvious software problem.
My position was, and still is, that if apple had offered even a relatively small discount on the purchase of a new iPhone as a gesture towards resolving the problem, I would have gone ahead, but the store manager refused to do so.
Once home I went ahead with restoring my backup, which did not properly restore most of my apps leaving me to install/update them using my data plan at significant cost due to the lack of WiFi.
'Not the way I would treat a customer whose family has 4 iPhones, an iPad and a MacMini...
I Have the same problem...iMac connects to wifi without trouble (and doesn't diconnect every 30 seconds like my iphone 6 that I updated to ios 9.3.1!!!!)
THe problem is clearly with ios 9.3.1, so now we just have to wait apple to release a update...:(
Yes, Apple need to recall phones that have been affected by their own update. We need to let the proper authorities know about the problem so that Apple will shoulder the defect and not us the consumers because damage has been caused by their own update.
Hi Juanito,
Yes it's really disappointing. I do hope Apple will recall the phones affected by their own fault and do the right thing for their customers. We really need to let the proper authorities know about it so they can force Apple to recall affected phones.
My new iPhone SE came shipped with this bug ridden piece of junk so I too have the same problem (among a few other niggles). I've tried restoring to factory settings, deleting the wi-fi connections, rebooting the device, swapping access point and tweaking various settings - nothing works.
I have many other iOS devices that connect just fine so it seems to be this version of the software that is at fault.
Hope those Cupertino dudes are on the case otherwise this brick is heading back to the apple store.
