iMac G4 sell illegal?

Hello,

This might be a weird question but, is it illegal to sell a mac without the install disks?

Hello Mac Guy 12,

To me it's like selling a car without the wheels.
I mean it should not be illegal, but the install disks should be considered part of the computer.

Just like the buyer of a car can find some wheels later, it's possible to find some original discs from another iMac G4,
although it's much more difficult.

Install discs belong to the Mac, even more than the keyboard or the spherical speakers!
Why would you want to "take them apart"?

- what if the computer that was sold had an operating system installed. isn't that selling a car with wheels but not a spare? if a wheel gets popped you would need to borrow one from another car or buy a new one.

It's not like a spare tire.
It's much more important.

- The safety of being able to troubleshoot from a bootable disc,
- the safety of being able to Erase & Install,
- resetting passwords or safely using the Firmware Password application...

are part of the normal everyday computing experience, even though your Mac is so well maintained you may never need it.

My question was not rhetorical:
I was just asking, why would you want to keep the discs and sell only the computer itself.
Is it that you lost them or are they broken or something?

no, when i bought the computer from shrevesystems.com they did not give me a install disk. so i did not need the imac anymore so i posted an ad in the newspaper and the person who bought it said it was illegal that i did not give the install disk with the computer. i'm just trying to see if this is illegal, i didn't think it was illegal.

Neither do I. Like I said, I see it like selling a car without the wheels.
Nobody forces anyone to buy a car without the wheels...

Now it would be interesting to see if shrevesystems.com has the install discs for sale separately...

I don't know whether that would be legal or not, but it certainly would not fit to Apple common sense, even policies I guess.
