apple gesture of goodwill

Hi new to this but could i ask a question?
I had technical issues with apple that took 2 months to fix , after an upgrade. It was sent away but came back in the same condition. After protracted time speaking with senior apple fault finders I was offered a gesture of good will of £170.00 after questioning the amount I was advised I could spend the money online in the apple website. I was not allowed to spend the money on any apple products and if I selected a product below £170 I would loose the difference. I was also not allowed to put the money to a more expensive product. After discussing with the advisor he said he would remove the gesture of goodwill !!
I wrote to Apple and received a standard letter by return acknowledging the issue but repeating they would not honour the gesture of goodwill.
Does anyone know what are my rights and what I can do about it?

all the best,

Carl.

It does seem an odd set of restictions, particularly not being able to spend the money on an Apple product ... or not putting it towards a more expensive product made by anyone else. What you can do, legally, depends to some degree on which country you live in and the laws they have governing such matters.

Where did you write to, when you say you wrote to Apple.
