How do I stop the Music app from opening on my iPhone when I plug in my headphones?

I've got an iPhone 6 running the latest software. I've noticed since a few updates ago that when I plus in my headphones the Music app opens, even when the phone is locked. I find this really irritating, as there are obviously a lot of other reasons I would plug in my headphones other than to use that app. It also opens to the same song each time (first song alphabetically), instead of something more logical like the last song I listened to.

In any case, I have to assume Apple developers wouldn't create this without a way to turn it off - anyone know how?

(This is almost as annoying as the time they assumed everyone wanted a free U2 album in their music library. Please don't make assumptions on my behalf!)

So, I signed up for these boards because I’ve been having the same issue in regards to music auto-playing, and came across a solution that has worked for me. I have an iPhone 6 and depend on a white noise app and sound-cancelling headphones to sleep through the night.

If you use third-party wired headphones, the issue for voice control/Siri/Music autoplaying at the slightest movement is the fault of metal on your phone touching the outer rim of your headphone jack. A lot of headphones have a little metal nub at the base of the jack that locks it in, but also makes the phone sensors internally go nuts and cause your phone to act possessed.

What I ended up doing was getting a small square of black electrical tape, poking a hole in the middle and threading the jack that connects to the phone through it so that there’s a barrier between the base that usually touches the outer part of the phone and the long part that actually inserts into the phone. Headphones still work, jack still rests firmly inside phone, but with that layer it prevents the random autoplay issue when you want to listen to anything else besides the music app.

I believe this feature is part of Suggested Apps. It thinks you want to listen to music so it automatically opens music for you when headphones are detected, likely because you have been doing this a lot recently. You can't disable this behavior specifically, but you can turn off app suggestions altogether by going to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps > turn off switch labeled 'Installed Apps'.
