IMovie '08

Hello,

I currently own an iMac '08 that is running OS X Yosemite. I love to make movies so I have been using IMovie '08 (Version 7.1.4.), but recently discovered I could download a newer version off of the Apple website. So I did that, I downloaded IMovie 9.0.9 and when I would go to open the package it would read "IMovie 9.0 required to install this update." So what should I do to fix this problem or error message?

Thank you!

iMovie '08, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), null

I see you are running Yosemite. By all means run the security update but do be aware that if you ever update the OS to El Capitan only the most recent version of iMovie (10.1.1) will work properly. See: Important considerations before updating to El Capitan

Furthermore, buying an iMovie 9 DVD is likely to be more expensive than buying iMovie 10 from the App Store so it may not be a very good idea.

If you downloaded from the Apple web site, the update is only to 9.0.9 from earlier versions of 9 which is why you got the error message. I am not sure how you update from version 7.x.x to version 9. It is not available on the AppStore. You might try going into the Movie menu item in iMovie and select check for upgrades and see if that works. You should be able to update to 10.1.1 which is the current version and runs fine on Yosemite. Just log into the AppStore with the Apple ID and check the updates or purchased items tab and see if iMovie is there.

Thank you for helping for me, but I tried going through the Movie menu item in iMovie and clicked check for upgrades, it opened a pop up that just asked if I wanted to buy iLife 11 and if so click learn more to direct me to the Apple website listing its perks. I went to my Mac AppStore and signed in with my Apple ID and checked for both updates in Purchased and Updates, and I just found a Software Update- Security Update 10.10.5 in my Update folder. What do you suggest now?

My point was that if you want to update iMovie you might as well update to the latest version which will still work if/when you update your OS rather than pay more for a version which won't work any more if you do. However, if you rely on features that were dropped or made more difficult in iMovie 10 (burning DVDs with chapters, using older camera which may no longer be supported for example) then you may still want to update only to version 9.

You are welcome. I was afraid you might get the buy iLife popup but thought it worth a try. As Neil said there is no free update path from 7.1.4(iMovie 8) to any later version of iMovie. If you want version 9 then you buy iLife 11 which you can only find from a third party on the web such as Amazon. Install it and then run the upgrade you already downloaded from Apple. But as GeeD said version 9.0.9 will not work with El Capitan so this is not the path to go if you plan on updating your OS any time soon. Alternatively you can purchase iMovie 10.1.1 from the Apple Store. It does have a different interface and there is a learning cure, but not to bad. Also some features are added and some deleted from earlier versions. It is the future of iMovie and as we already know version 9 operability ends with Yosemite. Unless you have some special need for 9 from a cost and or function point of view I'd think that going with 10.1.1 is the best choice. Good luck.
