iTunes Library 2,700 Albums, 800 gbs - Thoughts?

Running latest iTunes software with 2,700 albums, 800gbs of music (85% ALAC, 15% MP3) pointing to a Seagate External 2 TB Hard Drive (with an exact mirror hard drive backup). So far performance, has been fantastic, very fast, very efficient. I am very pleased with iTunes.

However, I am waiting for the shoe to drop. I love my music and burning cd's and recording albums to my library (yes i use Audacity to record vintage albums to digital and convert them to my library). But I hear that scuttleback is after awhile your library can only be so big. I have put upgraded parts in my pc already in anticipation of managing the large music library (upgraded and expanded memory, cpu, external storage)

So my question is "How Big is too Big"? Do other users out there have similar experiences to mine with positive experiences with iTunes and large libraries? Any concerns?

This is my hobby which I love to do, adding, changing, converting, tagging, new and vintage music into one source. Obviously, you have to choose a software and I chose iTuenes 🙂

Would like to hear other experiences out there. Thanks.

One of iTunes' big pluses is that it does cope well with large libraries. If there is a limiting factor it is probably main memory - I have two libraries that most people would consider large: one has around 1800 live shows, all in ALAC format (1.1TB disc space), the other around 5600 albums in a mix of 256Kbps AAC and 256-320Kbps mp3 (950GB disc space). Both are stored on USB 3.0 external drives. No issues with performance, even when used with relatively low-end hardware - I have a Dell micro-desktop as my master system (Celeron J1800, 2.41GHz), Windows 10 Home 64-bit with 8GB memory. I do notice slight degradation in performance (just in things like scrolling, not in playback) on the laptop I use occasionally when on the road, which has a similar processor but only 2GB memory.

Awesome, I knew there were others out there. I agree with you I do notice a few items (like fast scrolling, album artwork doesn't always finish caching in time, although the new 12.3 upgrade helps immensely here.) One thing I have noticed is I have 2,755 albums but sometimes it will only say 2,753 and actually leave two completely off the UI. That's recent, let me know if you have ever seen that. I am probably going to drop a line to the support team on it.

Thanks.

I've occasionally seen the reverse, where the number of albums reported in the UI is one or two more than expected, as result of the odd behavior that's been present in the last few releases of iTunes where songs don't always group correctly into albums, Normally (based on reports here) this seems to apply to new additions, but I have seen it a few times where an album that's been in my library for years suddenly - and for no discernable reason - splits into two.

The latter - the database actually pre-dates iTunes (and my usage of it) by many years, having started life as a FileMaker Pro database more than 20 years ago. The link with iTunes is a convenient way to add artist / album / track info for new updates, though it also includes details of stuff I have that's not in iTunes. It is also normalized in structure so I can track acquistions and plays for albums/shows, rather than per-song as iTunes does.

A couple more questions for you if you don't mind.

1) I am assuming your storage consists of external devices (primary and secondary external hard drives? If so what type? Or do you use some sort of NAS or server system?

2) What do you use to convert music (ALAC, FLAC, MP3, AAC, etc.)? I use MediaHuman Audio Converter.

3) What do you use to help "tag" your music? I use Mp3tag v.2.75.

4) What do you use to transport your music from one itunes setup to another (i.e. you mentioned going from home pc to laptop to listen to your music, do you use a "flash drive" to copy your library for use?

Thanks.

  1. Main library (commercial releases) and live shows library on 2TB USB 3.0 drives, plus a spoken word library on a 1TB USB 3.0 drive.
  2. Main library is a mix of CD imports (all 256K AAC) and digital download purchases (mainly from Amazon). The only conversions I do are for the live shows library, where I use Foobar 2000 to convert from FLAC (SHN for some older material) to ALAC.
  3. Where tagging is required I use Foobar 2000.
  4. Each library is backed up using Microsoft SyncToy (as described in turingtest2's user tip on Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy) to a portable USB drive. I use the backup of the main library to update a duplicate library (another 2TB USB drive) that's attached to my work PC. Since the backups are themselves complete, functional iTunes libraries (following the same principles described in Make a split library portable) I can connect one of these drives to any PC, SHIFT-start iTunes and select the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive, and have the complete library available to me.

I am seeing it pretty regularly now, that there are always 2 or 3 "overstatements" of the number of albums in my iTunes collection. Many times I will load iTunes and then see the count jump up by a couple. Do you or anyone know of a thread of where I can latch onto and take a look?

I know it's not an issue where the albums are splitting in two because there are "differences" in tagging, causing it's happening without me altering or making any adjustments.

Thanks.

The most likely cause is albums being split, since recent releases of iTunes have had a tendency to do this (occasionally) even when you haven't altered or adjusted any metadata. I've not seen any evidence that iTunes gets the count of albums wrong (though this is easy to check in Albums view based on the grid layout - e.g., if your iTunes screens shows 8 albums per row then the number shown in the last row should be (total albums MOD 8).

Funny, I did just that before, the album count does match the number of times I checked it. But it is, like I said, "misstating the number of albums, I have by splitting them" and like you said "without changing any of the metadata". Do you know if there is a case opened that iTunes is aware of this issue or a thread to follow? I would like to keep tabs on it. Thanks again for the help..

I'm sure its been reported multiple times (I've done so a couple of times, once for incorrect grouping of newly added albums, once for it happening with existing library content). I'm not aware of any public-facing ticket system that Apple maintains (though it may be there if you register as a developer). As far as I can tell the issue is related to evaluation of iTunes' grouping rules - essentially the data is right but its interpretation in the presentation layer is inconsistent. Since its been an issue for several releases (it may go back as far as iTunes 12) I assume that there isn't a "simple fix" for it 😟.

Interesting, so this issue has made more and more curious and started me looking at some different scenarios if possible. Unfortunately some of my pratfalls maybe related to "User Error" 🙂 I put the UI into song mode and then sorted by "Time". I found 2 entries that had "0" time, two were junk files, so I deleted them. Also, I found another file that was a missed place "digital booklet" (I changed the tag slightly about 2 years ago and this was never updated to the new entry). I made a small altercation there too. So, three entries cleaned. I'll keep a particular eye and see if this was part of my issue at all or not. Either way, this was a good exercise, and one I can periodically due to clean up my library, maybe useful for others too.
