iPad pro 9.7 battery

How much should the battery drain on standby? It is losing about 10% plus overnight. Is that normal?

Well there clearly seems to be a "battery" problem with this device, and this seems to be centered around BT/pencil.

I have finally unpacked my pencil and did some short tests and does appear this diminshes the battery.

I am going to try running some more Geekbench tests with BT switched on and BT on and pencil paired to see how it eefects battery life.

I find real world use the battery lasts about a day or less dependent on what you're doing.

Is Apple aware there is a problem with this model?

I agree with you completely. It seems to be a problem with the pencil and Bluetooth. Using WiFi and LTE yields similar battery life to iPad Air (first generation). With two days of moderate use and sleeping when not in use, I am at 80% since last charge.

I hope Apple is aware but with most issues they seem to lag in their response as with the issues in older models bricking with the installation of iOS 9.2 several months ago.

Thanks to all of you who've weighed in on this issue.. Your thoughts have been extremely helpful. I've had the same problem--my ipad pro 9.7 loses battery life at an astounding rate, far worse than any previous tablet I've owned, or any computer device for that matter. Even when it's plugged in and charging, I watch the battery meter going down, down, down. It's much worse than my colleagues' bigger ipad pros. I've also found that the apple pencil increases the problem. I notice a fair amount of difference when it's paired and unpaired. But I'll also try some of the other options listed here. Hopefully apple is reading and can fix the drainage problem in an update (soon!).

I can confirm that I had the same issue with fast battery drain on the iPad Pro 9.7 with Cellular. I glazed most of the comments and decided to follow the recommendation of turning the Data Roaming. I have a T-Mobile SIM for the record. Once I turned off the Data Roaming in the Cellular Settings I recharged the the battery to 100%. I let the iPad on standby for approximately 6 hours. I just checked the status - I am still at 100% charge. I believe this is what helped me resolve this issue for now. Hopefully Apple with recognizes this problem and fix it in the next iterations for iOS.

I also confirm this issue. Just bought an iPad pro 9.7 with Cellular. Battery was draining about 30-40% overnight. i turned off the Cellular Data and drain was less than 10% overnight. Agree this is definitely a bug in software where they do not put the celullar chipset in low power mode when not in use. Hopefully a fix is coming so I don't have to manually toggle on/off.

I have both sizes of the iPad Pro. The larger one gets awesome battery life but the 9.7 gets lousy battery life. I exchanged it at the Apple Store for a brand new one which I restored as a new device and the battery still stinks. I think the problem is either in the Smart Cover or the Apple Pencil. I have the LTE Version but I almost always use it under wifi. I will not be happy without the pencil, cellular access, smart cover and good battery life. My iPad Air2 also gets terrific battery life Apple should fix the problem when the new ones come out.

I'd like to second your answer and throw in my two cents. I've noticed the same behavior, battery life comparable to the Air2 without the Pencil in play, battery life greatly reduced while Pencil is paired.

Just a guess, but I suspect it likely has something to do with the refresh rate of the iPad Pro's digitizer. In the promo video for the Pencil, Apple says that while using Pencil the screen is scanned twice as often, to reduce latency while writing. Seems likely that scanning twice as often is going consume more power.

Smart Cover keyboard is the cause on mine. Battery would drop more than 50% each night when not in use, all apps off. I was using the keyboard as the cover and leaving it on. Three days ago I took it off and put on regular smart cover. It has not been charged in three days and I've used it as I normally do, which is email and blogs and a bit of nook reading. Today it is at 72%. So at least my version of the smart cover keyboard is drawing power even when closed.
