I´m on an 2009 21,5" iMac and after an update to 10.11.4 WOL over Ethernet is not working. It does over WLAN and as I
went back to an 10.11.3 version and it works there, I think it has to be the update.
Unfortunately I imported and processed a lot of photos being on the new version, and the library doesn´t work with 10.11.3.
Does anybody have a workaround for that problem?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
Same as before, neither in Safemode nor after reboot.
By Wlan working, by Ethernet still impossible to wake up.
Didn´t change anything.
Maybe I should wait for another update since I read elsewhere about this problem.

Also after upgrade to 10.11.5 I still don't wake up my iMac 24" early 2009.

This has been a problem for a very long time. It may only affect certain hardware configurations. Given the amount of time since its first appearance I have little reason to believe Apple is interested in fixing it.
I've tested with , snow leopard, lion, and Yosemite. They all work. I saw that some people said it worked up until 10.11.3 so I'm hoping they do fix it.
SL, Lion, ML, and Yosemite all worked (eventually... the initial releases of either ML or Yosemite did not, and it took a .3 or .4 release before it did).
I do not believe any El Capitan version has ever worked for me though.
Old hardware may be a factor but Apple isn't saying.
Thanks for the info. Yes, old hardware is definitely a factor. I have WOL working on mid 2011 iMacs. Unfortunately I still have 3 labs with the mid 2007 ones. I was hoping to get everything on the same page, but I may have to settle on Yosemite for the older iMacs.

Just downgraded to Mavericks (late 2008 model) and WOL is ok again.
Well, you're right that Apple is not interested in fixing it. They haven't responded to the bug report.
I downgraded to Yosemite and everything is hunky-dory.
